Mammoth Mountain Today Snow Report – by The Snowman

Center Bowl Chair 3Welcome to winter or just about, winter starts on December 21st. The word from Mammoth Mountain is not much natural snow so far this season.  so the snow making crew has taken over and now we can ski and ride without the natural stuff this holiday season.

Out on the hill there is around 400 acres of terrain open and 14 lifts running.  That is the great, but put a weekend or holiday crowd on what is open and your going to need to use some major caution.

The Key here is You can have a lot of fun out there right now, you just need to adjust your game plan.

My advice if your out on the hill the next couple weeks is to ski and ride early on the groomers and then hit up south park or main park for the rest of the day.  Parking at chairs 2, old 18 and at chair 4 are going to be your best bets.

Snowman was out on Saturday and skied everything that was open. Below is his report from across the hill with some images to show you what it’s like.  You can see all 105 images at this link.

Chair 15 & Little Eagle:  Not many runs are open off of chair 15.  Runs that are open are The Bridges, Chickadee, Holiday, Sleepy hollow, Pumpkin, and Lupin.

These runs have 10-20 inches of man made snow that is groomed nightly.  The snow is a nice firmer corduroy pack first thing and then the snow gets pushed around and it gets a bit firm in spots.  Ski and Ride the sides of the runs as the day moves on.

Canyon Lodge Area:  Swell off of chair 8 and Downhill off of chair 16 are all that is open at this time for intermediate’s.  Chair 17 has a couple runs open with snow makers working to get more open as fast as they can.

South Park - Chair 4 - Mammoth Mountain South Park: They have got lower south park dialed in, upper south park is not open and does not have snow on it yet.

The image’s here tell you the real story of this new set up.

Lot’s of fun is what all the players in the park were telling us on Saturday.

The New High Five Express:  This chair is FAST and will now allow you to make some killer early am laps on Solitude.  On a powder day look for the face to get tracked out in about 10 minuets.  Hint… try this chair during a storm once we have some base on the ground.

Face of Chair 3:  Snow making has begun on the Face of Chair 3, Snowman got these images late on Saturday morning of Center Bowl. Those guns have been on since last Wednesday morning.  A few more days of snow making and they will be ready to open the face up.

The Top: Cornice is open with some good early morning groomers.  When the wind is not blowing out of the east the snow gets a bit softer by mid day.  Stay on the groomed path only.  The the Rest of the top as we can see here in this shot of climax is not ready for play time yet.

The Unbound Main Park & The Super: Big Air a Super pipe and lots of cool stuff is set up to keep you having fun all day long.

The Groomer Runs: Across the entire hill you will find a mix of early morning soft groomed packed powder with some spot being a bit firm.  When you get to the part of the day when your hitting the hard pack spots, try riding near the sides of the runs. The snow gets pushed over there and the turns are still soft and fun. As always watch for rocks and icy spots from snow making operations.
