10-27-2012 Mammoth Mountain Snow Report

Your Own Mammoth Mountain VideoSnowman’s Mammoth Mountain Snow Report. Saturday at 7am we have a temperature of 34 and snowmaking is off at this time. Winds are out of the SW with gusts to 9 at 9000 feet.

We headed up to get some photos shots on Friday 10-26-2012 Click here for Mammoth Mountain Ski Area photos.

Up on Mammoth Mountain we have a 10 – 18 inch base on Broadway and the surrounding runs. Snow cats were out grooming the race runs on Friday to pack and preserve the snow we have. They used a winch cat set up on Andy’s Double Gold while we took our images. Snowman’s take is we need at least 8-12 inches of additional fresh heavy wet snow to be able to open early.

Up Top it appears the mountain has a good 1-3 feet of base now on the ground, some spots did get striped bare from the wind. Dave’s and Cornice are looking good for late October and are totally ski able. However, at this time the mountain is closed for hiking and skiing.

Snow-making crews have come on board early and blew snow all day on Wednesday and into Wednesday night. Guns will be off today as temperatures are coming up. The brownish snow you see on the web cams is rust coming out of the system. It takes a couple nights for it to flush out and then they blow white snow again. We will keep you updated as we get news on snowmaking up at the ski area.

As of now Opening Day is set for Thursday November 8th at 8:30 am on chair 1. What to expect on opening day will depend on the weather over the next two weeks. We got some base to work with now so that will help things big time. Our first call would be to expect 1, 6, 11 and the back side of 3 to run on opening day. Snowman will update this daily with any changes we see.
