11-18-2012 Update

Hello it is Sunday at 3PM, Snowman here with you from the slopes of Mammoth Mountain.

We have been under the gun of a base storm, it was a bit warm but the ski area from around chair 4 up got some moderate to significant base snow.

Our crew headed out early today to see what the snow depth and surface conditions were like.

Around the main lodge area we have had at least 22 – 26+ inches of new snow. That snow has over 3 inches of water in it, making it the perfect base type snow to start to the season.

snow-depthOut on the faces of 3 & 5 we measured 40 – 50 inches of fresh snow. That would be settled snow that we drove are measuring ski poles down to the old pack.

We took these measurements in a dozen locations on both faces. Best part about all that snow is you only sink in 3-5 inches on your powder turns.

It will be fun to watch how this base now evolves, been a while since we had a November Storm like this one.

Lot’s of people out getting the funky goods today.

There are still a lot of rocks, stumps and other obsticals around. So while it’s not super low tide anymore, until we get to 60 inch base, you will want to use extra caution.

The Thanksgiving Holiday is next week and the plans are to get more lodges and runs open if the up coming storm cycle come’s thru for the Ski Area. It is going to take at least two feet of this heavy snow to fall at Canyon and Eagle for a opener by Turkey Day. Snowman will be over at Canyon and Eagle this Sunday to see how much snow is on the ground and will report back here.

At this point the top is closed due to weather. During the last few days we had access to all the runs off the top. However it was low tide so you had to pick your lines carefully and ride slower then normal. With today’s new snow and more on the way, the top should ski and ride much better next week.

BroadwayIf your into the Groomers and Corduroy, Mammoth Mountain has 12+ runs groomed out every night for your enjoyment.

Our crew has been skiing and riding first thing in the morning on some very nice soft packed powder.

Just a note that the runs that are getting snowmaking will have a more firm pack surface, so be aware and be ready for those sections of the hill.

The Face’s of 3 & 5 have some good snow on them, just not a lot of base. Center Bowl and West Bowl are fun to ride, just stay off the sides of the runs were most of the rocks are. The face of 5 is open, but it is out of bounds skiing and riding. With 2 feet of additional base snow, both these area’s would offer up some of the best early season conditions in years. Keep praying it dumps over the next 48 hours.
