Mammoth Snowman Update 12-6-2016

free-hot-wax-mammoth-mountain12-6-2016 – 4:20PM –  It’s was a windy day on Mammoth Mountain with many lifts on wind hold.

Wednesday looks to be a mostly calm day with winds just 5-15 MPH with highs in the 20’s.

After that we are looking at a wet and warm forecast for Thursday into Early Saturday.

The system’s coming in will be what we call base storms with snow levels starting out around 7000 and then rising up to 8000 – 9000 feet.

Right now models are at odd at how much water and snow we will get.  We will fine tune amounts as we get closer to the event. Here is our early peak snowfall forecast from the Mammoth Weather Guy:

Wed 12/7 = 0”
Thu 12/8 = 2 – 3” H2O = 0.15” – 0.25”) **4

Wed – Fri 12/14 – 16 = 3 – 12”

December Snowfall = 5”
December Forecast = 45 – 60”  For our complete weather discussion with charts and weather images use this Mammoth Weather link.

If your coming up for Christmas and the Holiday Season we expect all lodges to be open with around 80% or more of the trails on the mountain ski & rideable.

Snow Conditions Report and News from The Hill

Snow Report Update 12-5-2016 – Out on the hill we currently have a base of 6-60 inches from Main Lodge up to the top.

The snow surface on the groomers is now a mix of soft packed powder along with some firmer groomed out man-made snow. It’s still what we call low tide so please stay on the groomed open runs around Main Lodge.

Up top there is some real fun wind buff to be had. You will want a good edge and also beware that up top there are patches of hard pack and true icy spots so use caution and slow down until you know what is good and what is ice.

The Face of 3 is a lot of fun, but again you will want an edge as the snow in here is firm and very fast. Saddle Bowl is fun with fresh corduroy every morning and then some nice soft packed powder as the day goes on.

The Face of Five is very low tide and not recommended, however a run down Coyote and a rundown solitude will offer up some fun turns off of chair 5.

Over at chairs 12, 13 and 14 we need more snow for the loading and unloading ramps. Also some of the runs in those areas could use some more base snow. If we get the storm at the end of the week that should be enough to get that part of the ski area open.

Over at Canyon and Eagle the word is they will open around the 14th of December weather permitting. There is snow on the ground at both Canyon and Eagle Lodges and the snowmaking guns area ready to start blowing. So far they have not turned on the snow making system on the Canyon side of the mountain.

The Unbound Park is now open with Main and the Forest Trail park all set up. As cold air allows snowmaking crews are blowing snow to build more jumps and of course the half pipe.

Mammoth Lakes Winter Bus Service is open for the season with all bus route open at this time.

Lifts open at this time: Chairs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, and 11 along with G1 and G2. Lift hours this week are 8:30 AM to 4 PM.

Runs open: Apple Pie, Broadway, Stump Alley, Rusty’s, Mambo, Forest Trail, Andy’s Double Gold, Saddle Bowl, Center Bowl, Christmas Bowl, China Bowl, West Bowl, Cornice Bowl, Dave’s, Climax, the Drop Outs, the Wipe Outs, Scotties, Road Runner, Unbound Main and more!
