Free Hot Wax Footloose Sports10-20-17 9 AM  – Good morning from Mammoth Mountain, 19 days to go before the ski area opens.

Snowman feels so excited I hope you do too.

At this time we have snow falling in the area, with snow down to 8000 feet at this time.

Checking on snow totals I have 1-2 inches here at my cabin at 8200 feet. 2-3 Inches up at Main and more up top.

The snow is a nice thick heavy wet base snow, just what we need to get some moisture back into the ground.

Mc Coy Station Cam Mammoth MountainWeather Update from 10-20:

The storm we have waited over two weeks for is here and it’s right on track to bring us 3-6 inches of heavy wet base snow. This mess will be out of here later today and then we are heading for a major October warm up.

For today expect a highs in the 30s on the hill with highs in the 40s on Friday. Lows will be into the upper 20s tonight.

Winds today are gusting to 35 in town with gust to 50+ over the ski area.

Look for warming this weekend with highs in the low 60s on the hill by Sunday and mid 60s by mid week. Here in town we could see high in the 70s next week.

Beyond that time frame we expect things to cool off as the MJO moves into Phase 6. Looks like the next chance for snow is about 10-14 days out.

Here is todays CFSv2 outlook for November, it shows a nice wet month. Confidence in that outlook is about a 3, we will keep watching and update you daily now.

Opening day for Winter Sports on Mammoth Mountain is November 9th, 2017. Snowmaking crews should start to come on board for set up and training around the 21st of October.

Things to do while we wait for winter sports to start:

For a fall colors drive Rock Creek Canyon has peaked up high but is still good lower down and mid way up. The June Lake Loop is all full of Color as is Crowley Lake and Old Mammoth.

Fall Mountain Biking is a ton of fun and it’s all based on peddle power. You can still ride the Bike Park just watch for crews getting ready for winter.

All Inyo Forest Trails are open and in prime shape for a ride.  Nothing like a ride with perfect fall weather. Rock Creek Canyon is also perfect now and there are a ton of fall colors.

Hiking is still wide open, most of the snow that fell 9/21 has melted now so it’s much easier to get around. Try the Sherwin Lakes Hike for a bit of color or a hike around Convict Lake will also offer up a colorful experience.

Welcome to MammothSnowman.com

Free Hot Wax Footloose Sports10-14-17 8AM  – Hello from Mammoth Mountain.

At this time we have some great fall weather in the area. Fall colors as of today are peaking out. If you’re into Fall Colors now is the time to head up to Mammoth.

Opening day for Winter Sports on Mammoth Mountain is November 9th, 2017. If we get 2-3 feet on the ground before that they will open early.

Snowmaking crews should start to come on board for set up and training around the 21st of October.

**Weather for Mammoth Mountain: Expect highs in the 50s the next few days with highs in the 60s in town. Night time lows for the next week will be down into the 30’s and into the upper 20s. Expect light winds at times the next couple days 5-10 MPH.

For the upcoming week the storm we have mentioned for two weeks is finally on our door step. As of this morning QPF would indicated 12-18 inches of snow. Yes way up from the 3-6 inches we have been talking about. One model had close to 2 inches of water coming in over the Sierra crest Thursday into Friday.

These amounts will have to be looked at again on Monday and then we will have more confidence in what may be coming our way. At this time confidence is moderate that we will pick up a few inches at least.

Looking at snow levels, expect them to start out high on Thursday above 10,000 feet and then drop to around 8000 – 9000 feet as the storm moves thru on Thursday night. By Friday we will see snow showers all the way down to 6000 feet or possibly lower.

Pray for Snow – Snowman out

6-21-2017 6:30AM – Hello from Mammoth Mountain. We still have tons of snow up here with a base of 45-200+ inches out on the hill.

That base will allow the Mountain to remain open into August. At this time there is no set closing date for the ski area.

The Mountain Bike park will open this Saturday with at least the lower 2/3rds of downtown open.

Crews are clearing snow with a back hoe to get more trails up and running.

Weather wise it’s summer time now with highs will into 70s all the way up to Mc Coy station. Night time lows will be warm in the upper 40s.

Snow conditions are now back to summer corn and slush. Make sure to wax your gear up daily for the best glide on the snow. Nothing worse them bogging down in the slush.

Off the groomed there is a mix of some fun snow, some sun cups and now also a dusty brown layer from dirt blowing off the back of Mammoth Mountain. Sign Line, Cornice and Drop Out 1 are the best runs off the top right now.

The Face of 3 is groomed and the snow gets real good in there about 9 am. West Bowl has a nice bump line in it.

If your coming up make plans to start out of the mill and ride up chair 2. If you want some firm snow get out at 7:30 AM and hit up the Main Lodge area, the Face of 3 and a groomed out Cornice.

The snow starts to get soft fast and by 8:30 AM Stump Alley is soft with everything else getting soft by 9:00 AM.  Cornice and Sunshine have silver lined corn going off by 9:30 to 10 am.

Lifts running will be chairs will be 1, 2, 3, and 23 along with G1 and G2. Lifts hours are now running 7:30AM to 2PM. Please note chair 5 is also open at times when the mountain runs their high performance camps.

You should be able to ski down to Main Lodge into mid July with Stump Alley possibly open into the July 4th weekend. After that you will be downloading from Mc Coy Station. The last time we stayed open this long was in 1995.

Ski ya later, Snowman out.

Ps I took last week off from skiing with some knee pain, I will be back out on Thursday to get a fresh photo snow report and a video report from the hill. Have a great day..

6-13-2017 – Hello from Mammoth Mountain. We still have tons of snow up here with a base of 70-230+ inches out on the hill.

That base will allow the Mountain to remain open into August. At this time there is no set closing date for the ski area.

The Mountain Bike park will open a week from this Saturday with at least the lower 2/3rds of downtown open. Crews are clearing snow with a back hoe to get more trails up and running.

This Saturday the gondola will re open for the summer season for skiing, snowboarding and scenic rides once again.

Weather wise we are heated for a radical change from winter temperature the last few days to down right warm summer temperatures for the high county.

Highs will get into 70s all the way up to Mc Coy station if our forecast pans out. Night time lows will be warm in the upper 40s.

Snow conditions will be turning back to summer corn and slush by Friday. Make sure to wax your gear up daily for the best glide on the snow. Nothing worse them bogging down in the slush.

Off the groomed there is a mix of some fun snow, some sun cups and now also a dusty brown layer from dirt blowing off the back of Mammoth Mountain.

Cornice and Drop Out 1 are the best runs off the top right now with G2 opening this weekend climax and the Sign Line should also be a ton of fun.

The Face of 3 is groomed and the snow gets real good in there about 9 am. West Bowl has a nice bump line in it.

Snowman will be back out on the hill this Thursday getting you some fresh images and a quick video report.

If your coming up make plans to start out of the mill and ride up chair 2. If you want some firm snow get out at 7:30 AM and hit up the Main Lodge area, the Face of 3 and a groomed out Cornice.

Check out the snowfall video I got on Sunday, those flakes where massive in size. That video has now got 1.2 million views. AMAZING!

Ski ya later, Snowman out.

6-12-2017 – Hello from Mammoth Mountain! Welcome back to winter we have 3-5 inches of new snow on the hill today!

As of 6am winds are gusting to 70+ MPH over the top of Mammoth with gusts at Main in the 35-45 MPH range. Down here in town we also have winds gusting to 25-35+ mph at times.

Current temperature this am is 15 up top with a 20 at Main Lodge, brrr so much for spring and summer weather.

Highs today will be in the 40’s up at the ski area. Lows will be in the 30s at night.

By Tuesday things clear out the winds back off and we going into a warming trend right into next weekend. If your ready for summer it looks like late this week it will get rolling for us here in Mammoth.

Snow conditions today are full on winter with a mix of hard pack, dust on crust and some fresh powder out on the hill.

Off the groomed there is a mix of some fun snow, some sun cups and now also a dusty brown layer from dirt blowing off the back of Mammoth Mountain.

Cornice and Drop out 1 are the best runs off the top right now with G1 and G2 closed for repairs. The Face of 3 is groomed and the snow gets real good in there about 9 am. West Bowl has a nice bump line in it.

Over on the Face of 5 I found the snow not to be very good on Wednesday. I would avoid that area unless they decided to groom it out again.

I took some fresh images on Wednesday, make sure to scroll down the page to see what it looks like out on the hill. The snow is finally starting to melt, but there is 250 inches on spots up top.

Lifts running will be chairs 1, 2, 3, 6, and 23. G1 and G2 are now closed thru June 16th, looks like they will be closed on weekends as well. Lifts hours are now running 7:30AM to 2PM. Please note chair 5 is also open at times when the mountain runs their high performance camps.

There is still a base of 80-230+ inches out on the hill. That base will allow the Mountain to remain open into August.

You should be able to ski down to Main Lodge into mid July with Stump Alley possibly open into the July 4th weekend. After that you will be downloading from Mc Coy Station. The last time we stayed open this long was in 1995.

Snowman will be out on the hill every other day right up until we close. Expect more photo snow reports and video updates on a weekly basis.  Ski ya later, Snowman out.

6-10-2017 – Hello from Mammoth Mountain! We have strong winds today and they are expected to be with us into Sunday now. With moderate winds still on Monday.

As of 6am winds are gusting to 90+ MPH over the top of Mammoth with gusts at Main in the 35-45 MPH range. Down here in town we also have winds gusting to 35+ mph at times.

Highs today will be in the 40’s up at the ski area. Lows will be in the 30s at night. There is a 30% chance of a dusting of snow on Sunday into Sunday night.

This far south we are only expecting a dusting, however if the front slips a bit more south we could see a few inches of snow on the mountain with a dusting down to 7000 feet.

By Tuesday things clear out the winds back off and we going into a warming trend right into the following weekend. If your ready for summer it looks like next week it will get rolling for us here in Mammoth.

Snow conditions are now full on spring conditions. The best snow is on the groomed runs at this time.

6-8-2017 – Hello from Mammoth Mountain!

Clear blue skies now forecasted into the weekend with a cooling trend.

Highs in the 40’s to low 50s up at the ski area. Lows will be in the 30s to low 40s at night.

Winds will be out of the SW at 15-35 MPH the next couple days before backing off to 10-15MPH on Sunday.

Snow conditions are now full on spring conditions. The best snow is on the groomed runs at this time.

Off the groomed there is a mix of some fun snow, some sun cups and now also a dusty brown layer from dirt blowing of the back of Mammoth Mountain.
