Snowmaking on Mammoth Mountain

During the Summer of 1991, Mammoth Mountain began installing an extensive snowmaking system, digging a new on-mountain lake next to Mc Coy Station to supply water and guarantee an early November Opening.

That first summer saw a 200 acre system installed in under 100 days.  It was amazing to watch how fast it got built.

The crew that built the Snowmaking System left in late October and that night we picked up 2-3 feet of snow.

The Perfect set up to start learning how your system works.

Over the last 15 years the system has grown to cover trails from Little Eagle, Canyon Lodge to Main and everything in between. They can even blow snow on Cornice bowl so top to bottom skiing is possible with out the natural snow fall. Snowmaking also plays a major role in the building of the unbound parks here at mammoth mountain.  Ever wonder how they build the half pipes?  They blow tons of snow and then push it into place.

Over the years the mountain snowmaking crew has learned a lot from trail and error.  At this point they have mastered snowmaking at the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area.

We will be out getting all new fresh HD footage of the snowmaking crew & system this October and November. Check back here soon to see some great video!
