Mammoth Snowman Report – 2-7-2017

2-7-2017 – 6:30 AM We have a winter storm warning in effect above 8500 feet today and a flood watch below that.

Over the last 24 hours the mountain has picked up 11-18+ inches of fresh heavy wet snow and we have moderate snow still falling at this time.

The weather for this week will be wet and windy, snow levels will come up today to around 8500 – 9000 feet for rain in town and heavy wet sierra cement falling on Mammoth Mountain.

FYI Canyon Lodge is at 8400 feet while Main Lodge is at the 8900 foot level.

Highs the next few days at Main Lodge will be in the low 30’s with a low tonight of around 30. That is going to result in some heavier powder, so go as fat as you can with the powder ski’s.

Winds today will be strong and damaging in the higher elevations, with a southwest wind 65 to 70 mph, winds could gust as high as 105 mph.

Expect the top to be closed and Main Lodge will have issues running today with extremely heavy wet snow falling and those high winds.

My guess is 22 and 25 will also be shut down today with winds at 50 and gusts to 80 MPH at this hour.

By Wednesday it will still be very windy, with a southwest wind 40 to 45 mph, with gusts as high as 65 mph.

Here is your updated Snowfall Forecast for this storm cycle:

Roads are now R2 from the junction of Hwy 395 and 203 and through the town of Mammoth Lakes. Please slow down and chain up if you are not in a AWD or a 4 x 4. This heavy wet snow with rain on it is a accident waiting to happen. Take the bus if you can today.

Snow conditions:  The new snow that is falling is sierra cement, it skis and rides great but it is thick and a bit more work. We had a blast for 5 runs on Monday in that stuff.

With snow levels coming up the snow surface at Canyon and Eagle will be getting wet. The snow will feel more like spring skiing, for winter conditions you will want to start out of Main Lodge this week. F

All lifts and runs are now open on Mammoth Mountain on a base of 150 to 300 inches of snow.

PS: Snowman and Family are in need of a new home, the one we are in is being updated and sold. If you happen to be a local owner of a home and are looking for a local family to rent out long term or on a lease options, please contact us @ 760-709-1351.

Photo Snow Report with comments from the Snowman.

The first few images are of Scotties. They have been grooming it out nightly for some steep fun groomed out speed runs. Most people hit up Cornice so this area had much less traffic on it.

Scotties runs right into St Anton so you can ride the cord all the way back to the bottom Gondola.

Top of the World Climax

Gold Hill via Chair 9 – All the groomers leading down to chair 9 are perfect corduroy in the mornings. I was able to get 6 laps in before it got tracked up.   The Dragons Head and Back are all filled in, give them a shot on the next powder day they are open.
Havasu Grande – Easy to get in with all the snow, still have not got to ski it yet.

Another real fun run it go to the top of five and bomb down the comeback trail over to 3. China and Christmas bowl are now one big merged run and they are groomed perfectly into Coyote. This is a fun fast and steep groomed run, give it a shot today.
Terry’s Run is closed for racing a lot, but on Monday it was opened with perfect cord all the way down. Best part is there is never much traffic in here so you can ski or ride fast.  Looking out to St Anton with the top of 1 and 3 in the image. Look at all that snow, we will be skiing at least until the 4th of July. Took some laps over on chair 12, nobody was around so I got turn after turn on more perfect corduroy. The k2 wanted to make some big round turns as you can see in this image. Fascination for fast fun at Main and Chair 1. Saddle Bowl has become one massive run. West Bowl Hangman’s Bowl – Yes it is still steep and scary Half Pipe Competition this week

Now is the time to make plans to come to Mammoth and see and play in all this snow. Make sure to scroll down this page for some local coupons and for fresh images from last Tuesday.

Also to note we will have the Record Snow Design out this Wednesday. Sorry for the delay we been shoveling out for days, now that we have caught up we can finish the design with Craig Fine.

Ski ya later… Snowman out
