Mammoth Snowman Report – 2-21-2017

2-21-2017 – 7:21 AM – Good morning from Mammoth Mountain we have 18-30+ inches of new snow and it is snowing light to moderate at this time.

There is a winter storm warning in effect for today. Expect snow above 7500 feet, snow totals will be in the 5-7-inch range above the 9000 foot level.

Winds will be strong today, as of 7am we had a gust to 138 MPH at the top of Lincoln with a sustained with around 90 MPH. That is the reason that most of the mountain is on wind hold right now.

Highs on the hill today will be in the upper 20s to low 30s, later today some colder air will move into the area. At that time snow levels will drop and we will get some lighter dryer snow falling.

Snow conditions for today will be fresh powder and wind effected powder. Expect lower mountain lifts too open when and if the winds back off.

The base at Main just went over the 200-inch mark, with well over 350 inches over the top of the mountain.

Roads are now R1 in town, chain up unless you have awd or 4×4 with M&S tires or better on. Also to note the road is R2 to Main so chain up unless you have a 4×4 with MS or Snow Tires on it.

Also to note the snow piles in town are 10-20 feet high, it makes it very hard to pull a car out into traffic. Please beware that people need to slowly inch their cars into the road to be able to see traffic while pulling out of local side streets and driveways.

Ski ya later… Snowman out
