Mammoth Snowman Storm Update 10-29-2017

Welcome to

Free Hot Wax Footloose Sports10-29-17 11:00 AM – Are you ready for a taste of winter?

Looks like we have the first significant winter storm of the new season on the way. Confidence is now growing in a system that moves in late Friday and lasts into Sunday.

The fine details will evolve over the next few days, as we are still in the outlook period.

First call on this system is for 1-3+ feet of snow from Main Lodge up to the top of Mammoth Mountain. There is also the potential for this system to be even wetter so stay tuned for the Monday AM update.

Snow levels will start out around 8000 feet late Friday and drop to around 5,500 feet by Sunday.

Local Roads will turn to R1 next weekend with chain controls possible down to the Sherwin Grade. Time to get your winter car kits set up and be ready to chain up and SLOW DOWN.

Currently we have clear sky’s with some patches of snow on the ground above 9000 feet. Highs have been in the 60s on Mammoth Mountain with the 70s down in town.

Lows have been in the mid to upper 30s at night. Just light wind gusts in town and on the mountain over the last couple days.

Over the next few days we can expect a very slow cool down. Highs will go from the 60s on the hill down into the 40s on Friday with highs this weekend dropping into the low 20s by Sunday. Winds will start to pick up today and will be blowing big time come this Thursday.

After this system moves thru there will be a ton of cold air in place for a great snowmaking run. If this system pans out as close to what we see now, chair 2 could be running for opening weekend.

Stay tuned in here at as we will be updating in the AM and PM daily now. Have a great day and if you’re a local get your yard and car ready for winter NOW.  Snowman and the Weather Guy out….

Things to do while we wait for winter sports to start:

Fall colors are now past peak all over the Eastern Sierra. However there is still a ton of yellows out there to be seen during this warm October week. Old Mammoth, Mc Gee Creek, Crowley and June all have some left over colors to check out.

Fall Mountain Biking is in great shape, with last weeks 1-3 inches we have moist trails with a bit of snow out in the Bike Park. Remeber the Bike Park is closed so no lift access.

All Inyo Forest Trails are open and in prime shape for a ride.

Hiking is still wide open, however there is mixed snow and dirt starting at the 9000 foot level in the Lake Basin and in the Back Country.

Also to note Fishing has been going off this Fall here in Mammoth. Perfect time to come up and throw in a line before the snow and cold hits in 5 days.

For Local’s it’s time to wake up get your wood stacked and covered. Be ready a world in white is not far off. Feels like Summer today in 6 days it will feel like Christmas. Get ready NOW!
