2-10-2020 8:22 AM Update – Good morning from the Mammoth Mountain area, the almost endless NE flow continues over the mountain at this time.

Last night there was a peak wind speed that I reported of 140 MPH out of the NE over the top. Down in town the peak gust I saw was in the 45 MPH range.

Current Conditions: Over the top of the ski area there is a temperature of 4 with winds at 63 MPH gusting to 75 MPH out of the NE. Down at Main Lodge, the wind is blowing at 6 MPH with gusts to 19 MPH, the morning low was 14.

So the question everyone is asking is how are the snow conditions? With the very cold temperatures and winds, we have had the last 24 hours it’s going to be a bit firm today.

The Top continues to get hammered with NE winds, the snow up there is a bulletproof wind buff now. My advice is to avoid the top until mid-week when it warms up and the NE winds have gone away. Even then beware of falling as it’s going to be fast and firm no matter how much warming we get.

I would expect the snow on the lower hill to soften a bit today, but with this northeast flow still in the area, most of the mountain will still be on the solid side.

The good news is temperatures are going to moderate (see my outlook below) into mid-week for some better skiing and riding.

For now, the best skiing and riding is going to be on the miles and miles of endless groomers Mammoth Mountain offers up.

Remember the grooming crew has the most advanced equipment you will find in the industry, pretty amazing that those machines can create such great snow to ski and ride on.

Mammoth Mountain on hill weather outlook:

Today is going to be clear with a NE wind once again. Winds gusts will be @ 45-75+ MPH over the higher elevations, with winds on the lower and mid-mountain @ 15-35 MPH at times.

Morning lows today have been in the single digits and low teens out on the Mountain. Expect temperatures to come up into the upper 20s to low 30s today.

On Tuesday: Morning lows will be into the teens to start the day with clear skies expected all day long. Expect temperature climbing into the upper 30s to low 40s with winds continuing to be out of the NE.

Wind speeds will be 10-15 MPH on the lower and mid-mountain with gusts in excess of 50 MPH possible over the top during the early morning hours decreasing during the day.

Midweek now looks pt sunny with light north winds 5-15 MPH turning to the west, with highs in the upper 30s to low 40s with morning lows in the mid to upper 20s.

More Mammoth Mountain Information:

The Mammoth Mountain Snow Base: Eagle Lodge Area 1-3 feet  – Canyon Lodge Area 2-3 feet – Snow Study Site at Main 4 feet – Runs off the Top 5-6 feet – Mammoth Sign at 11,000 feet 8-9 feet

Snowmaking crews have been out supplementing the base for several weeks now. This effort is helping to keep the groomers in great shape with some really fun carvable snow and in most areas, the snow is free of those little floating rocks that came out during past lower snow years.

All lifts are now running for the winter season (wind and weather permitting), lift hours are 8:30 AM to 4 PM.

Mammoth Area Shuttles are also running for the season when you check into your lodging ask about the closest shuttle stop and leave your car at the condo.

Other Things to do:

For Winter Fun try Wolly’s, Tube Park. It’s a blast for a couple of hours of sledding. Nothing like a fun session of sledding in the lanes, give it a shot if you’re looking for something new to try. Here is a link with more information on local sledding and the tube park.

There is also the Town Ice Skating Rink that is open for the rest of this month. It’s located just beyond the Vons Mall across from the Mammoth High School. Lots of fun to be had on the ice and yes they have ice skate rentals.

For non Winter Sports, I have been doing some mountain and road biking a couple of days a week.

Lower Rock Creek Canyon for Mountain Biking is wide open with just a bit of ice and snow on the upper 1/3 of the trail in the shady areas. Beware of people climbing the trail and for hikers in the area, not a lot of people on the trail but you will encounter a few.

Down in Bishop, there are a ton of trails I have discovered that are great to ride, as of now none of them are mapped so I will have to work on exposing some more of what you can ride in this area.

For Road Biking, Bishop has seen a mix of cold and warm riding conditions over the last week. Lot’s of people out taking in the deserted roads from Bishop to Round Valley. You just need to layer up most days as it’s been in the 50s to low 60s.

Also to note there are spots that you can fish at this time of year, google it and maybe get out there for a hookup. The Eastern Sierra offers up so much to do right now, get some skiing in and then get out and explore.

I will add in some more ideas next time I post… See ya soon.for
