Mammoth Mountain Snow Report from the Snowman

10-11-2021 @ 8:22 AM  – Good morning everyone, it’s way too early to be doing snow reports, but as I always say be ready to go on October 1st since you never know what can happen.

We had the first snowfall of the season out on Mammoth Mountain last Friday 10-8-2021. The snowfall got up to 6.5 inches with the QPF at .86 at the Snow Study Site at the 9000-foot level. That snow started as rain, turned to glop, and then over to heavy base snow before finishing off with an inch of 10-1 snow.

The ground all over the hill has been bone dry so the system was a much welcomed site bringing in moisture in the form of rain and snow. As the snow that fell melts it’s going to soak into the ground. Then this week it will freeze up and then thaw and seep into the ground some more.

This is all good news as snowmaking crews when they get started soon will have frozen ground to blow on not dry dirt. The snowmaking crew took advantage of Friday’s snowfall to quickly set up their system for their initial start-up. It was awesome to see how they used 6 inches of snow to get the guns out fast.

Looking ahead models have been advertising a big change starting next week into the following weekend. If this pattern makes it far enough south we could be skiing and riding by Halloween.
