10-13-21 @ 8 AM – Hello and thanks for stopping by MammothSnowman.com.
Talking a look at the windowcast we have cloudy skies over Mammoth Mountain and down to the Mammoth Lakes Airport. No snow is falling at this time. The snowmaking system is cranking at full capacity today.
Yesterday’s snowfall amounts ranged from 3-6 inches above 8000 feet. Sure was nice to get a second helping of snow this early in the season. The additional snow along with the snow that is being made will not be all melting like some of you think it will.
Checking conditions around the hill this morning at the top of Mammoth Mountain there is a temperature of 24 winds are out of the NW at 17 gusting to 26 MPH. Down at Main Lodge, the temperature is 35 with WSW winds at 9 MPH gusting to 19 MPH.
Snowmaking is now OFF, but should run again tonight and then the door closes on making snow.
The Weather Forecast: High Pressure moves in late this week and will be with us into the middle next week or longer. Beyond that big changes show in the model, but those changes keep getting pushed back in time.
For now expect Indian Summer weather with highs in the 50s to low 60s over the next week in Mammoth. Bishop by the weekend will be into the 70’s. Night time lows after tonight will be above freezing in just about all areas.
Been working hard on a whole new weather format and weather forecast center for you here at the website. Check out this link for that information, I will be updating the #wxmammoth center almost daily now that we are into the snow season.
Road Conditions: Roads are now clear watch for pathes of ice and snow in shady spots above 8000 feet.
Time to get your winter car kits updated and ready for the upcoming snow season. Practice putting your chains on now not when it’s snowing and dark on the side of the road.

The Snow Report: 3-6 inches of additional new snow came in yesterday. On top of that, the snowmaking system has been cranked up since mid-day on Monday. With the cold temperatures this morning the snowmaking guns are really cranking out some snow. Great to see this happening in mid-October.
Looking at the upcoming weather patterns for the rest of this month, you have to wonder if there is an early-season dumper lurking on the horizon for the latter half of October. Who knows maybe we get blessed with some base snow that they can run early on.
As of now, Opening Day is set for November 13th at 8:30 AM, no need to ask if they are going to open early. If they get a 3-foot dump there is no doubt the opener will be moved up. When the opener does happen the crews at Mammoth want it to be a fun time, not one run with rocks and stumps like the old days.
Oops **Had an error on the new snow report page, we are working on fixing that this morning.**
**Prices on Ikon Season Passes go up $100 on October 15th** Here is the link to learn more about the Ikon Season Pass.

More Local Information
Fall Colors: Tuesday Update – We still have lots of peaking Fall Colors with a backset of snow in the Eastern Sierra. The ground above 8000 feet is white with most of the colors surviving the cold so far.
There have been freezing temperatures in the area the last few nights. Last night there was a hard freeze, will have to see how the trees react to it getting that cold.
If you’re coming up for Fall Colors this week I would expect it to be cold into Wednesday morning. The rest of the week will be warmer with some clear blue skies and clear air to get some great Fall color images.
Best areas for Colors Now: MC Gee Creek, Upper Rock Creek Canyon Road, Bishop Creek Canyon, Old Mammoth, and the Twin Lakes area
There will be an update mid-week after we drive around the area and see what has happened to the leaves from 2 nights of hard freeze’s.
Mountain Biking: We went from some great warm days of fall riding to winter quick this year. While we expect warmer Fall days later this week, be aware that trails above 8500 feet are going to be snowed in for a while now. High country trails could be done for the season, depends on what happens in about 10 days from now.
The good news is we have some of the best mountain biking around in the lower elevations during the Fall and Winter months. My go-to spots for the next few months will be Rock Creek Canyon by Tom Place, The Big Buttermilk – Tungsten Loop area, and Chipmunk Canyon out of Bishop.
Late morning to mid-day is the perfect time to get out for a long ride with great riding tempratures. I will update the Mountain Bike Report page in a few days as time allows
Hiking: You will find snow on the ground from 8000 feet up now. If you’re not used to hiking in the snow get some poles and a good pair of waterproof boots before you hit the trail. Footloose Sports has all the hiking gear you need and the staff knows the local hiking trails well. Check them out when you’re in town and be properly prepared for hiking in the snow.
You also have the option of using the local paved paths around town. Those paths get plowed out and should be awesome for a hike right now. I have spent hours with my kids on those paths, they are one of the best improvements the town ever made.
Another great hike right now would be around Convict Lake. That trail gets lots of sun so the snow should melt out the next couple of days.
For a steeper trail hike with snow but not much, would be the Sherwin Lake Trails just outside of town. Last but not least lots of people like to hike the Lower Rock Creek Trail, it’s a great option when there is snow in the higher elevations.
