Eastern Sierra and Mammoth Mountain Mountain Bike Report

Eastern Sierra Mountain Biking Report

June 16th, 2022 – Can’t believe it’s mid-June already. It’s prime time to ride here in the Eastern Sierra.

By Friday expect a big cool down with gusty winds in the 30-45 MPH range up in the Mammoth Mountain Bike Park. Moderate winds at times will spread all the way to Bishop by the weekend.

Lower Rock Creek Canyon is sweet right now, but it will be hot by mid-day. Ride early if you can and watch for hikers and dogs.

In Mammoth Lakes, both Mountain View and the Knolls Loop are also open and in great shape.

Trails out in the Inyo Forest are also all open, watch out for sections of sandy road on some of those forest service bike routes.

The Mammoth Mountain Bike Park is running from Main Lodge down to Canyon and Little Eagle Lodges.

Lift access is from the Bike Park Shuttle at the Village at Mammoth up to Main Lodge. The bus loads on the Canyon Blvd Side by the Gondola.

Starting on June 17th the Gondola will be open to mid-chalet and so will chair 11 for Mountain Biker lift access.

And then Starting on July 1st Chair 16 and Chair 2 will run Friday – Sundays into Labor Day weekend.

Here are the trails now listed for this weekend in the Bike Park. Velocity, Twilight Zone, Midtown and lower Chain Smoke will be open from McCoy Station via the Panorama Gondola.

Lower Twilight Zone, Lower Pipeline, Uptown, Downtown, Shotgun, Smooth Operator, Gopher Trail, Lakes Trail, Big Ring, Paper Route, Manzanita, Timber Ridge, & Juniper.

More trails will open as crews can clean up the mess from the big October rains that fell out on Mammoth Mountain.

Mammoth Lakes Area: Everything from Mammoth Rock Trail to Shady Rest is now open, cleaned up, and clear of snow.

The trail head at Mountain View is dry, and you can make it to the top vista point.

The Knolls Loop is in prime condition, enjoy the views from this ride as they are epic.

Inyo Forest Rides: Inyo Craters Loop, Big and Little Smokey Bear Loops and the ride up Bald Mountain are all open and in great condition. Yes these areas have some sandy sections so be ready when you hit them.

Toms Place Area:  Lower Rock Creek Canyon is in great shape and is wide open for a ride, do watch for hikers and dogs on the trail.

Sand Canyon is open, but I have not ventured here and have no reports of what the trail / road condition is like right now.

Over on the Sunny Slopes side, all the dirt roads are open for a ride. However, beware of the sandy sections as everything is dry now in that area.

Bishop AreaWhite Mountain Road is open as are all the funky trails in that area. Also to note this area gets direct mid and late-day sunshine so ride here early or it will be hot.

For the best single-track action right now, of course, Chipmunk Canyon is King with several miles of climbing, downhill action, and cross country style riding.

You will find Chipmunk Canyon at the end of Barlow Lane in West Bishop. All the trails in this area are unmarked, however, you can see them on the Strava app.

Ride-On everyone, Snowman…
