Mammoth Mountain Locals Snow Report Update

November 4th, 2022 – Welcome to the first Locals Snow Report of the new Winter Season. Here is the latest I have about the Opener and the Snow Conditions.

The Snowmakers have blown a ton of new snow over the last couple of days. So far they have got Broadway covered along with Saddle Bowl and the areas around MC Coy station and the link over to Broadway from there.

Abundant amounts of snow can be made quickly now with the updates that have been made to the snow-making system over the summer. In the image above you can see the Fan Guns mountain on Towers now line Broadway from top to bottom.

Outside of the snowmaking operations, you will find there is about a foot of snow with the windy exposed sections back to the dirt. Take this in mind if you have the plan to go in charge of the runs that are open, it’s not happening yet. Give it a week and more runs should be open.

Looking up at the Top this morning you can see the NE winds on the back side of that system have stripped off the first 100 feet of snow. Pretty typical when you don’t get the heavy wet base snow and the NE winds kick in.

If you’re wondering if it’s worth it to come up for Saturday, well if you want a typical opener with good vibes and you want to get some early turns in come on up. Expect a couple of runs to be open this weekend aks Broadway and Saddle Bowl.

As for features I am watching the Unbound Crew right now setting up in the lower unbound park that you can access from lower Broadway. They plan to run chair 6 so you can get the first laps of the season in the Unbound starting Saturday.

Bottom line: If you’re coming up it’s going to be very limited, but this is the Dave MC Coy way. The lifts open as soon as there is one run that you can ski or ride down. Got to love that way of thinking still exsits today, one more reason I love Mammoth Mountain as a home mountain.

Also to note everyone is asking what about chair 2 and the parking situation for Saturday. Stump Alley needs more snow to be ridable and they are not making snow in that area right now.

However, you can park and ride the shuttle bus from 2 up to the Main Lodge but you can’t ski or ride back you have to take the shuttle up and then back.

If next week’s storm turns out to be a big one there is a good chance that chair 2 will open by what was going to be opening weekend November 12 and 13th.

Expect the Snowmakers to continue their snowmaking efforts every chance they get for as long as is needed to get the entire network of runs covered by snowmaking open by the December Holiday period.

Looking at today’s weather data for the next week it’s looking like several feet of snow is on the way early next week. That would allow for more lifts and runs to open by the original opening date 11-11.
