Welcome to MammothSnowman.com – Snow Season 2023
January 5th, 2022 @ 1:41 PM – Good afternoon, and thanks for stopping by, here is your afternoon update from a snowy Mammoth Lakes.
There was a burst of heavy snow and strong winds last night in the early morning hours creating blizzard conditions and nasty driving conditions. Main Lodge had to close for the day with lifts running out of Canyon and Eagle Lodge today.
For those coming up tonight expect a break in the snowfall on Friday so more lifts and runs will be open, however, you can expect some long delays on the mid and upper-mountain lifts.
Roads: 395 has re-opened with R2 requirements down 17 miles south of Mammoth Lakes and then R1 from there to Bishop. Mammoth Lakes Roads are R1 with R2 up to Main Lodge. Cal Trans and Local Road crews have got the worst of it cleaned up so you can safely get here or go home now.
Mammoth Mountain Weather: Currently, up top, there are cloudy skies with light to moderate snowfall and a temperature of 16 degrees with winds out of the southwest at 37 to 51 MPH. Down at Main Lodge, the temperature this morning is 22 degrees with winds at 12 to 33 MPH.
Snowfall amounts overnight and through the morning hours are in the 18-24 inch range from the Main Lodge to the Top. At the Snowman Cam at the 8200-foot level, there are 16 inches of new snow with snow piling up at this time.
There has been a break in the heavy snow with the next wave of heavy snow moving into the area soon. Once that last band passes the snow will turn to snow showers with pt cloudy skies expected by mid-morning on Friday.
If you’re out on the hill on Friday you can expect pt cloudy skies with clear skies by mid-morning. Temperatures will come up into the low to mid-20s with moderate to strong SW winds at times. Expect gusts as high as 50+ mph over the higher elevations.

Mammoth Snow Conditions: On Friday expect lots of groomed-out terrain with tons of powder in the powder fields of Mammoth Mountain. Winds will be picking up in the afternoon so the refill machine should kick in about the time they get the top opened up.
This weekend you can expect a windy wind buff session into the early afternoon hours on Saturday and then Sunday will be a storm riding day with lower and possibly mid-mountain lifts able to run. For Monday and Tuesday, the storm system coming in looks like a direct hit on Mammoth Mountain with excessive snowfall possible. This is looking bigger than the New Years’ weekend event.

Travel Alert…>>> Remove the Snow from your Car Please… You can get a ticket for leaving snow on the roof of your car, it’s a hazard when it flies off. The heavy sierra cement snow can break out car windows behind you when it shed off.

Was hoping to get a ton more photos today, but I only had the morning hours and with not much open I just skied Lincoln. I will be back out on Friday and will be skiing out of Main so I can get better images of the top. Click any of the images below and the viewer will pop up. Snowman

Steve Taylor – Mammoth Snowman – Over the last 30+ years, Snowman has spent countless hours studying and learning about Mammoth Mountain Weather and Snow Conditions first hand. He has been skiing around the hill with marked ski poles since March of 1991 so he can measure the fresh snowfall amounts out on the hill.
Snowman started blogging this information back in 1990 on the old Mammoth BBS system, then the RSN Forums and then on to MammothSnowman.com in 2004 with Video & Photo Blog report. (No YouTube back then). Facebook got added to the fold back in 2008 and then the Facebook Group in 2016.
Reports, videos, and photos from the website have been featured on both local TV Stations here in Mammoth, along with AP, Fox, ABC, CBS, and NBC News.
