Mammoth Mountain Weather Forecast & Discussion

February 14th, 2023 @ 8:42 AM – An inside slider has dropped into the area with a dusting of snow and much colder air moving over Mammoth Mountain and the entire Eastern Sierra. Snowfall amounts today are looking to be on the low side with a trace to an inch possible.

As the low moves to the south and east of Mammoth Mountain the cold air hangs around thru Wednesday with the northeast flow in place with fridged negative wind chill factors expected.

By Thursday the next cut-off low will be moving south well off the coast line of California. With the low as of now expected well west of the Mountain, there will be just a slight chance of snow showers on Friday under cloudy tp pt cloudy skies. By the holiday weekend, the cut-off low looks to be stuck to the south and west of Mammoth.

The next chance of a storm looks to be around day 9 onward as ensemble models have a wetter pattern from that day into day 14. So there is hope for a return toward some real winter powder days down the line.

If you’re going to be out on the hill on Wednesday, expect cloudy skies that will turn sunny by mid-day. Temperatures around the Main Lodge will be in the upper teens to the lower 20s. Wind chill values will be as low as -25 over the mid and upper-mountain areas.

The wind forecast has a northeast wind of 30 to 35 mph decreasing to 20 to 25 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 50-60 mph over the mid and upper mountain before decreasing during the afternoon hours.

On Thursday expect sunny skies to start the day with increasing clouds from the next cut-off low off the coasts. Temperatures around the Main Lodge area look to come up into the mid to upper 20s with SW winds increasing to 15-30+ MPH.

By Friday there will be a 20% chance of snow showers with a trace to 1 inch of snow possible above the 8000-foot level. Temperatures will be chilly once again with highs in the low to mid-20s.

The Weekend Outlook calls for mostly sunny skies with highs in the upper 20s to lower 30s and a light to moderate N to NE wind flow.

Mammoth Mountain 10-Day Outlook

2-11-23 – Over the 10 day period there will be 3 chance for light snowfall with one of those days being today Sunday. The next chance will be Tuesday as an inside slider makes it way into the area and then again a chance for snow next Friday.

The main weather story as of now will be the cold air that moves into the area later Monday night into Tuesday. The small amount of snowfall that is in the forecast should help to keep conditions great and not allow the pack to get to firm.
