Welcome to MammothSnowman.com – Snow Season 2023

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2023 @ 9:17 AM Good morning, you will find 3-5 inches of new snow out on Mammoth Mountain this morning.

At the time of this update, there are light snow showers falling across the hill. Up top winds are out of the WSW at 39 MPH and gusting up to 47 MPH with a temperature of -3. Down at the Main Lodge, the temperature is 18 degrees. Winds at the top of Chair 1 are out of the SW at 33 MPH gusting to 45 MPH with a maximum wind gust of 58 MPH this morning.

Snow Surface Conditions: Today conditions have reverted back to a softer mid-winter powder and packed powder surface. Over the days ahead this new weather pattern will offer up some of the highest snowfall ratios seen in a long time. The snow will be more like that famous Alta Powder you get in the inter-mountain regions.

Mammoth Mountain Weather: Looking at all the weather data as of 7 AM, the high country at 9000 feet and above has 3-5+ feet of new light powder snow in the forecast into late Saturday night. With 6-12 inches possible from Lone Pine to Bishop.

There will be a bit of a break on Sunday and then the next cold system moves in to start next week off with more large snow totals along with high snow ratios showing up for the high country.

To get the detailed day to day snowfall forecast check out Ted’s amazing update at this link.

Road Conditions: CHAINS OR SNOW TIRES ARE REQUIRED FROM 20 MI NORTH OF BISHOP.

>>>Travel is not recommended on Friday and Saturday with moderate snowfall at times forecast for the Owens Valley. Expect snow on the road down to Lone Pine and even possibly down to Coso Junction.

Things to do off the Hill: There are a bunch of winter activities besides skiing and snowboarding you can do up here in Mammoth and the Eastern Sierra. Here is a link to that write-up on what to do in Winter.

Ski ya Later, Snowman…

Welcome to MammothSnowman.com – Snow Season 2023

Saturday, February 18th, 2023 @ 8:17 AM – Good morning, more clear skies over Mammoth Mountain and the Eastern Sierra Today.

Looks like a perfect Holiday weekend to get outside for some wintertime fun. The snow line in the area is currently sitting right at the top of the Sherwin Grade, so there are lots of options for snow play at this time.

The Snow Surface Conditions out on Mammoth Mountain have been great on the groomers. With crisp carvable snow right out of the gate on the fresh corduroy You will find early on.

Off the groomed there are some good sections of wind-buffed snow on the mid and upper mountains. For the full Mammoth Locals Snow Report use this link.

Road Conditions: 395 is open and clear. Chains are required on 203 from the Village up to Main Lodge. Many side streets and parking areas in Mammoth Lakes also have snow cover and ice on the pavement so be prepared in those areas. Rock Creek Road is still closed at Toms Place. (395 Travelers should be ready for very low snow levels and chain controls by the middle of next week.)

Mammoth Mountain Weather: As of this update over the Top of the mountain, winds are out of the WSW at  10 MPH gusting to 12 MPH with a temperature of 20 degrees. At the Main Lodge or the 9000-foot level, winds are out of the W at 2 to 12 MPH with a temperature of 29 degrees. Down in Mammoth Lakes, the temperature is 29 degrees with calm winds.

If you’re going to be out on the hill today, highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s with light SW winds. The warmer temperatures this weekend will allow the snow to loosen up into a fun-packed powder surface.

It does look like a new series of light to moderate storms will start to affect Mammoth and the Eastern Sierra starting around the Tuesday/Wednesday time period. To get the full details on the upcoming weekend and the next series of storms expected, use this link.
