Welcome to MammothSnowman.com – Snow Season 2023

Tuesday, March 7th, 2023 @ 9 AM – Good morning, skies are starting clear out over Mammoth Mountain this morning with the rest of the Eastern Sierra under bluebird skies. There is 2-3 feet untouched powder up Top and on the Face of 3 this morning. πŸ™‚

Mammoth Mountain Weather: At the time of this update, up top, the winds are out of the SW at 47 MPH and gusting up to 52 MPH with a temperature of 2 along with wind chills down to -27. Down at the Main Lodge, the temperature is 14 degrees with an SSW wind gusting into the 20-50 MPH range.

If you’re going to be out on the hill today, expect mostly sunny skies, with highs climbing into the low to mid-20s. The wind forecast calls for a southwest wind of around 20 mph, with gusts as high as 35 – 55 mph. On Wednesday skies will be pt cloudy with a few snowflakes possible at times.

Road Conditions: 395 is open to Mammoth with R1 conditions on 203 and the local roads in Mammoth Lakes. The Mammoth Scenic Loop is closed as is Rock Creek Road at Toms Place.

Town Winter Update: In Mammoth Lakes, the snow walls have become so high that’s all you really see in town now. It’s a bit hard to find most of the local businesses as they are all behind walls of snow. Say a prayer for the locals as the long winter is really starting to take it’s toll.

The continued abundant snowfall is creating issues with excessive snow loads, roof shed dangers, and very narrow roads. Add in the fact that much of the parking in Mammoth is now being used for snow storage and it’s a big mess.

Officials have now declared a state of emergency to allow more outside resources to move in and help with snow removal issues. Cal Trans has also sent more trucks and crews to the area to help with clean-up and the next incoming storm cycle.

If you plan on coming to Mammoth Lakes this week my advice is to bring a snow shovel and all your food supplies. Be ready for limited parking and congestion on local roads. Snow removal crews are working 24 / 7 to clear snow out before the next series of wet storms start Thursday night.

For those planning on coming up for the weekend expect a mix of heavy rain and heavy snowfall Friday and Saturday. You’re going to find that there will be multiple road closures and a very limited amount of lifts open on Mammoth Mountain.

Snow Surface Conditions: Powder, Powder, and more Powder is the call today with Wednesday being a leftovers day along with fresh groomed out packed powder.2-3 feet of new snowfall over the weekend with the seasonal snowfall total now up to 555 inches with a base of 214 inches at the 9000-foot level.

Things to do off the Hill: There are many winter activities besides skiing and snowboarding you can do up here in Mammoth Lakes and the Eastern Sierra. Here is a link to that write-up on what to do in Winter.
