Welcome to MammothSnowman.com – Snow Season 2023

Saturday, March 11th @ 7:53 AM – Good Morning, the big storm along with its pineapple express as brought in 30-36 inches of 5-1 base snow from Main Lodge up to the top.

The water content so far is up to 6.65 at the 9000-foot level. Moving forward snow ratios will start to come up with at least 10-1 ratios or better with the second system that comes in early next week.

Over the last 36 hours, the heavy wet snowfall was mixed with some rain up about to the Village at Mammoth. From what I observed the snow rain line never made it up to Canyon Lodge on Friday.

For those who are planning to hit up Mammoth Mountain today, the Main Lodge is closed at this time. Canyon and Eagle Lodges will be open but with some delays in getting lifts open.

Mammoth Mountain Weather: At the time of this update, up top, the winds are out of the SW at 43 MPH and gusting up to 67 MPH with a temperature of 19. Down at the Main Lodge, the temperature is 26 degrees with an SW wind gusting into the 30-60 MPH range.

If you’re going to be out on Mammoth Mountain today, expect light to moderate snowfall possible at times. Temperatures will be in the upper 20s to low 30s with SW winds 25-45 with gusts in the 45-65 MPH range over the higher elevations. Snowfall amounts from 9000 feet up, will be in the 6-10 inch range today with snow rations in the 8-1 range.

Road Conditions: 395 is open to Mammoth with R1 conditions 18 miles north of Bishop with R1 in Mammoth Lakes. The Mammoth Scenic Loop and Rock Creek Road are also closed until further notice.

Snow Surface Conditions and Ski Area Information: 2-3 feet of brand-new sierra cement is what you will find on the hill today. Cooling temperatures with 1-2 feet of additional snowfall with high snow ratios will prep the snow surface for a much better experience on Sunday.

Do be ready for some big delays in getting the Ski area re-opened to limited and then full status over the next 4-5 days. At this point, it’s better to re-schedule your ski and ride time to next weekend or beyond.

Town Winter Update: In Mammoth Lakes, the snow walls have become so high that’s all you really see in town now. It’s a bit hard to find most of the local businesses as they are all behind the walls of snow.

The continued abundant snowfall is creating issues with delayed snow removal, excessive snow loads, roof shed dangers, and very narrow roads. Add in the fact that much of the parking in Mammoth is now being used for snow storage and it’s a big mess.

Officials have now declared a state of emergency to allow more outside resources to move in and help. Cal Trans has also sent more plow trucks and crews to the area to help with clean-up and the next incoming storm cycle.

If you plan on coming to Mammoth Lakes this week my advice is to bring a snow shovel and all your food supplies. Be ready for limited parking, road closures, and congestion on local roads.

Ski ya Later, Snowman…

He has been skiing around the hill with marked ski poles since March of 1991 so he can measure the fresh snowfall amounts out on the hill.

Snowman started blogging this information back in 1990 on the old Mammoth BBS system, then the RSN Forums and then on to MammothSnowman.com in 2004 with the Video & Photo Blog report. (No YouTube back then). Facebook got added to the fold back in 2008 and then the Facebook Group in 2016.
