Welcome to MammothSnowman.com – Snow Season 2023

Tuesday, March 21st @ 12:24 PM – Good afternoon yes it’s snowing out on Mammoth Mountain today with snow also down to Toms Place and then halfway down the Sherwin Grade. There have also been reports of snow down into Bishop but nothing sticking at that elevation.

Mammoth Mountain Weather: 6-8 inches of new snow above the 9000-foot level so far today. Up top, the wind direction is out of the SW at 53 MPH gusting up to 74 MPH with a temperature of 17. Down at the Main Lodge, the temperature is 23 degrees with an E wind at 7 to 10 MPH at times.

If you’re going to be out on Mammoth Mountain today expect moderate snowfall with 6-12 inches in the forecast. However it does seem this system is a bit off this morning so the snow totals are in question. Temperatures will come up into the upper 20s to lower 30s by mid-day. Winds will be SW 15-25 with gusts in the 45-65 MPH range with stronger gusts up top.

Road Conditions: 395 is open with R1 or chains required from 17 miles north of Bishop. In Mammoth Lakes roads are R1 with narrow streets so please slow down. The Mammoth Scenic Loop and Rock Creek Road are closed until further notice. Also to note 395 is closed at Mono Lake both North and South for at least 2-3 more weeks if not longer.

Snow Surface Conditions: Powder, Powder and More Powder is on tap for Tuesday and Wednesday with snow ratios in the 10-1 range. 22, 25 and 5 are all running this afternoon in the moderate snowfall.

Wednesday there will be much less snow so expect more lifts to run by later in the morning. Not sure if it will clear enough for the top to open on Wednesday, but it is possible.

If you’re looking for groomers, the cat crew was out last night, so expect corduroy in spots with an inch of snow on top of the groomed-out surface. Should be a fun day out on the hill with all the new fresh snow.

Town Winter Update: With all the out-of-town resources in the area much progress is being made in widening roads, especially in the Canyon Lodge area.

There are also lots of snow shovelers in the area now clearing roofs and decks. Expect the snow removal recovery process to take a couple more weeks and then travel in town will resume to more normal.

If you plan on coming up over the next few days I would still bring your own food and supplies and have a snow shovel ready to go.

Don’t forget a good book or two and if you have kids bring sleds and snowshoes. Be ready for slow travel in town and very narrow roads in spots.

Also of note, when you’re checking into your lodging property and notice any structural damage, please report it to the lodging manager and call 911 right away.
