Welcome to MammothSnowman.com – Snow Season 2023

Monday, April 10th @ 7:15 AM – Good morning, spring has sprung with highs into the low 50s at the 9000-foot level on Sunday with Mammoth Lakes reaching the mid-50s with a 75 down in Bishop.

The bottom line is the snow has started to convert over to spring conditions now as winter has retreated for the time being.

The snowline at this time remains just before the top of the Sherwin Grade (6000 Feet) leaving all of southern Mono County white. Below that elevation Bishop and Round Valley are greening up with lots of off-the-snow activities to be had at this time.

As the area warms up this month you will want to have multiple things to do when you travel up. Most people ski/ride in the mornings and then change over to other afternoon activities once the snow gets too wet and sticky.

Mammoth Mountain Weather: Currently at the top of Mammoth @ 11,000 feet the morning temperature is a warm 32 degrees with the wind flowing out of the SW at 30  to 33 MPH at times.

Down at the 9000-foot level / Main Lodge, the temperature is at 42 degrees with an SW wind at 11 with gusts to 30 MPH. Time to lose those extra layers from the cold days and don’t forget to put on some sunscreen.

If you’re going to be out on Mammoth Mountain today expect temperatures to rise to the low 50s at the 9000-foot level / Main Lodge after overnight lows in the low 30s. SW winds will be in the 15-30 MPH range.

For Tuesday expect 3-5 degrees of cooling with continued breezy conditions above the 9500-foot level.

Road Conditions: 395 is fully open north and south with no restrictions or waits. The Mammoth Scenic Loop, Benton Crossing Road, and Upper Rock Creek Road are closed until further notice. Tioga and Sonora Pass are closed and not expected to open until around July 4th.

Snow Surface Conditions & Mountain Operations: Over the weekend temperatures warmed up more then forecast and the entire hill is starting to convert over to spring conditions.

It’s going to take several days of the freeze thaw cycle to get the snow to convert over to the famous Mammoth corn snow.

When is the best time to ski and ride in the Spring? If you like conditions groomed out to firm and fast, be out at 8:30. For those who want the snowpack to loosen up a bit from 9:30 AM on is your best bet.

You also want to make sure you clean and wax your gear nightly to avoid the slow and sticky feel you can get on the spring snow. Take advantage of the Free Hot Wax that you can get from Matt over at Fast Ski Sports in the Vons Mall.

The Ski Area is expected to stay open through the end of July and possibly well into August this Summer. My take is that Mammoth should be able to break the record for the latest closing ever which was in mid-August of 1995.

For those who are wondering about the Mountain Bike Park, there will be a major delay in getting the park open this year. I have heard rumors that they might not open at all.

Whatever the case there will still be lots mountain biking in the area. Make sure to check out our weekly mountain bike reports to learn where you can ride starting now.

Mammoth Mountain Photos: Check out our almost weekly photo albums from Mammoth Mountain. There are photos at this link from the last 4 winters so you can compare the current to the past. Here is the link to all the photo albums.

Ski ya Later, Snowman…

Website Author – Steve Taylor – Mammoth Snowman Over the last 35+ years, Snowman has spent countless hours studying and learning about Mammoth Mountain Weather and Snow Conditions first hand. He has been skiing around the hill with marked ski poles since March of 1991 so he can measure the fresh snowfall amounts out on the hill.

Snowman started blogging this information back in 1990 on the old Mammoth BBS system, then the RSN Forums and then on to MammothSnowman.com in 2004 with the Video & Photo Blog report. (No YouTube back then). Facebook got added to the fold back in 2008 and then the Facebook Group in 2016.
