Mammoth Mountain Snow Report from the Snowman

February 5th, 2024 @ 7:30 AM – Good morning, it’s a world in white up here on Mammoth Mountain with 3-4 feet of new snow from storm number 2. Let’s not forget that before system 2 came in, the mountain had just picked up 2-3 feet.

The low tide days are over now, with a base of 80-120 inches from the Main Lodge up to the Top. That’s plenty of snow to open up the entire hill for your enjoyment. It’s a Fabulous February, and that means it’s time to get up here and make some turns.

Out on the hill today, you can expect some big delays in getting the lower and mid-mountain lifts open as the crew digs out and rebuilds ramps so you can safely get on and off the lifts.

Ski Patrol has been out since early this morning, working hard to prevent any slides while the mountain is open to the public. Going to take a while to get the job done after this big snowfall and all the added wind loading that took place late yesterday and into the evening hours.

What will run today? As lifts get dug out, here is what is expected to run: 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 11, 15, 16, 17, and the lower Gondola will be the first to open. Next up, I would expect 22 and 25, with 3 and 5 by mid-day.

The top Gondola, along with chairs 9, 12, 13, 14, and 23, are not expected to run today. However, if the winds back off a bit, there is a slight chance for the top later today.

If you’re looking for Mammoth’s famous groomed runs this morning, several runs got groomed late after the heavy snow, and winds stopped, but overall, most of the groomers will not be corduroy until Tuesday morning.

By Wednesday, all runs should be groomed out with some fantastic mid-winter packed powder to be had. Temperatures look great to keep the snow in a softer winter pack right through the upcoming weekend.

For you powder lovers, there is plenty of snow now on Lincoln Mountain to rip up and have a blast on. Over on the Faces of 3 and 5, all the runs are well covered and should offer up some great powder skiing and riding once those lifts can run later today.

As we move into midweek The Backside area by Chair 14 will finally have enough snowpack to ski and ride all the glades under 14. Hemlocks is also ready to go with some decent filled-in lines to rip up.

Over by Chair 9 in the East Bowl & Gold Hill areas, this last week of snow has brought the snowpack up to a decent level. There are lots of good lines now from the Dragons Back to Wazoo and over to the Tail. Yes, the trees are still a bit tight in the lower sections of Wazoo, but there is enough snow to get in some great turns once it opens again.

FYI: As you make your plans to come and ski and ride as of today I am expecting that the mountain will be able to run until Memorial Day this season. If there are several more breakthroughs of the El Nino jet, there could be skiing and riding into June.

Also, please take note that the Chair 1 Replacement Project will be starting on April 1st. That means no chair 1 beyond 4-1-24 for the spring season; make a note and adjust your on-hill plans.

Disclaimer on Snow Conditions and our Snow Reports

This is a simple disclaimer to keep us legal. First, this website is run by Mammoth Locals, we are not employees of Mammoth Mountain, but yes they do support our efforts.

Second, Snow Conditions change by the hour, so when you read our posts please consider when the post or report was made.

Check the date on the report before you email us! Nothing worse than some crybaby complaining that our conditions are not right. Yep, I get emails like that, again read the date, and don’t be a jerk.

Please Remember that the longer time has passed, the more the conditions have changed.

Third, what Snowman or any other member of the www.mammothsnowman.com community posts is purely based on how that person views snow conditions.

Everyone looks at things in their own view, so one person’s epic might not be your epic day. For example, I love spring corn snow but many people hate it.

Fourth you can die skiing or snowboarding, if you’re not skilled don’t take the runs Snowman or somebody else in the community might suggest.

Many of our videos contain extreme footage by professional athletes that ski and ride full time. We do not endorse these activities and encourage you not to try the tricks and extreme moves the professionals make in our videos and or images.

If you do, you do so of your own accord and risk and you further understand you risk almost certain death at times!

And last but not least thanks to the State of California you must be 18 or older to use this website.

If you’re not 18 log off now or we will have to call your parents to shut you down. 🙂
