Sunday, September 8th @ 7:15 AM Hello, and thanks for stopping by MammothSnowman.com. Checking area webcams and looking out the window this morning, You will find clear skies with limited haze.

Looking at local weather stations, the temperature at the top of Mammoth Mountain is 47 degrees (11,053 feet), with an S wind at 28 MPH with gusts to 34 MPH. At 8900 feet, the temperature is 55 degrees, with an SW wind at 3 MPH and gusts to 14 MPH.

The temperature at the Little Eagle Lodge, at 7,900 feet, is 69 degrees. At the Mammoth Airport (7500 feet), it is 50 degrees; in Bishop, it is 51 degrees.

Are you planning a trip to the area?  The shoulder season has arrived in the Eastern Sierra; expect light crowds on mid-week days with a slight increase in weekend visitors. In September, there is a lot to do that is still summer-related.

Over the next week give the Mountain Bike Park a try (Closing 9/15), and maybe hike up to Crystal Lake for fantastic views and a lakeside lunch. Here is a link to events and activities you can do over the next month.

For those wondering about the Fall Color Season, I saw some photos from Upper Rock Creek Canyon with yellowing leaves by Rock Creek Lake last week. You can see on the Tamrack webcam that there is some yellowing on the Aspens right by Tiwn Lakes.

During most years, the highest terrain peaks by the end of September, and the yellowing slowly moves down in elevation. Driving around the area the last week I have also seen some leaves yellow as far down as Bisho, so maybe the show will be a bit early this year. I will keep you updated as I see more changes.

Mammoth Mountain & Eastern Sierra Recreation Weather Forecast

Clear skies with breezy days are in the forecast right into next Thursday as the first real taste of Fall-type weather moves in. The cause of the change is a relatively strong inside slider moving into the Great Basin Wednesday into Thursday.

From Mammoth Mountain to Mammoth Lakes and down to Bishop, you can expect cooler days by the middle of next week and into the following weekend. While it will be getting cooler, the forecast still keeps overnight lows above freezing in all locations at this time.

How about rain or snow? These systems tend to be dry, with the ECM showing no snowflakes or raindrops. However, the NBM model does have a few flakes over the crest. If the system takes a more hybrid track and comes right down the Sierra Crest, there could be a dusting.

Here are the details of what you can expect in the High Country into next Wednesday: Midday temperatures at the 8900-foot level (Main Lodge / Lake Mary) will be in the upper 60s into Tuesday. By Wednesday, temperatures will drop about 4-7 degrees, with highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s. Overnight lows for the next few nights will be in the upper 40s to lower 50s, dropping into the lower 40s by midweek.

Today winds on Mammoth Mountain will be SW at 15-25 MPH, with gusts of 35-50 MPH at times. The wind speed will back off a bit on Monday and Tuesday before coming up again on Wednesday as the low drops into the Great Basin. Gusts on Wednesday look to be NW to N at 45-60 MPH over the top and area ridges.

Travel & Road Forecast: All area roads are open now, except the road to Reds Meadow, which is only open Friday through Sunday. The Reds Meadow Road will be closed this season starting 9/16 due to road construction. For current webcam road conditions on 395 and 203, visit our road conditions page at this link.

Eastern Sierra Mountain Bike Report

Welcome to September in the Eastern Sierra. The Mammoth Mountain Bike Park will remain open until September 15th. While conditions in the park are a bit dusty, they are a total blast at this time. Now is the time to get some lift laps in while you can.

Once the park closes, you are allowed to ride on the hill. However, You need to stay out of the construction zones. Once the park closes, features and hits are closed off to the public, so keep that in mind.

Fall is a great time to ride in the Eastern Sierra; I recommend you ride Mountain View or Mammoth Rock Trail or maybe try Lower Rock Creek Canyon Trail. I like to do laps down on the upper two sections of Lower Rock Creek. It’s such a blast, and if you’re in shape, you can return to the top quickly via the road.

Lower elevation rides will resume by mid-September as the heat of Summer moves out of the Millpond and Bishop area. There is nothing like a ride in the Foothills of West Bishop or inside the Poleta, OHV, area.

Mammoth Mountain Snow Report – Snow Season 24-2025

There are just 70 days until the Mammoth Mountain Ski area is scheduled to open for Veterans Day Weekend. This year, the opening date is set for Friday, November 15th.

If the mountain gets a big early-season snowstorm, that opening date will be moved quickly, so keep that in mind. As of now, I have no idea what lift they plan to start the season with. It’s hard to imagine chair one will be done by that date, but we will see.
