Winter Outlook 2019-2020 for Mammoth Mountain and the Eastern Sierra

Fort Independence Travel Plaza

Fort Independence Travel Plaza – HWY 395

8-15-2019 – 12:38 PM – It’s mid-August and now is the time that we start to take a daily look at how the weather is setting up for the next winter season on Mammoth Mountain.

In recent years past we have seen some slow starts with snowfall and limited snowmaking mid-October into early November.

Cooler air seems to make it’s way into the air by the early part of November with snowfall mid to late month followed by a break in the action.

2 of the last 3 winters turned out to be on the large side. So what is coming snow and temperature-wise this Winter?  lol It’s anyone’s guess at this point.

With that said let’s take a look at some of the videos and charts Snowman like’s to look at during these warm August days and nights.

Mammoth Weather Update – 8-1-2019

8-1-2019 – 4 PM – Clear blue skies over Mammoth Mountain and the entire Eastern Sierra this afternoon.

Friday expect more of the same, by Saturday into Sunday we will see an increase in highs about 8-10 degrees for the high country.

We will also be adding a chance of Thunderstorms Sunday into Tuesday now. Looks like a 20-30% chance of storms across the higher terrain of Mono County.

Highs in Mammoth Lakes will be in the 70s with low 80s Sunday into Tuesday. It will be warm and a bit muggy during those days.

Up on Mammoth Mountain and into the Lakes Basin look for 60s climbing into the low to mid-70s this weekend.  Higher elevations above 9500 feet will be in the 60s if you want to cool off from the Summer warmth.

Highs down in Crowley will be in the upper 80s with upper 90s in the Bishop area.

Nighttime lows are into the 50s in the Mammoth area, with upper 50s to low 60s in the lower elevations and the Owens Valley.

Winds will be light during the morning hours with afternoon winds 20-30 MPH at times out of the SW.

August is looking out to start out hot with temperatures backing off a bit for the second week of the month.

Looking way out September into mid-October is looking like average to just above average temperatures with dry conditions.

The outlook for this winter is anybody’s guess at this point. Always be ready for feast or famine is what Dave Mc Coy always told me.   Snowman out…

Mammoth Snowman Summer Update 7-29-2019

7-29-2019 – 2 PM – Good day everyone, thanks for stopping by MammothSnowman.com.

What a great weekend in Mammoth we just had with the highlight being the last days of snow sports on Mammoth Mountain.

We have some photos from the weekend posted on our snow report page here.

Looks like a great week of Summer fun this week, get on up here for some Mountain Bike, some Fishing and maybe a nice hike.

With last weeks thunderstorms, there has been a couple of fire starts over the high country, but nothing has taken hold as of this time.

A bit of smoke was visible over the crest on Sunday and there was a hint of it in the air last night, but it’s all gone today.

The weather for today is calling for clear skies with no thunderstorms or rain in the forecast. Highs in Mammoth will be in the 70s with upper 60s to low 70s at Main Lodge and into the Lakes Basin. Higher elevations will be in the 60s if you want to cool off from the Summer heat.

Nighttime lows are into the 50s in the Mammoth area, with upper 50s to low 60s in the lower elevations and the Owens Valley.

Winds will be light during the morning hours with afternoon winds 20-30 MPH at times out of the SW.

Fishing Season: It’s been a great season of fishing here in the Eastern Sierra out of Mammoth Lakes. Lake fishing has been very productive with lots of hookups. Mammoth and Convict Creeks are starting to flow a bit slower, and are fishable in spots.

For more information about fishing check out the fishing section of the web site here.

Mountain Biking: The Mammoth Mountain Bike Park is open with 3 lifts and the shuttle bus now open. Looks like about half the trails in the park have been cleaned up and opened after that massive winter we had.

Here is a link to trails you can ride outside of the mountain bike park for free in the Inyo National Forest

For our complete update please use this link to the Mountain Bike Report.

Hiking: The Mammoth Lakes Basin trails are in prime shape now for a day hike. With the warmth of Summer on, hiking in the Lakes Basin is much cooler than the lower elevation trails.

Road Biking: Try a ride from Mammoth to June and back for a nice long road ride. Parking at the Green Church 5 mins out of Mammoth and riding out to Benton and back is also a great ride right now as well. Down in the Owens Valley, the mornings up to about 11 AM are perfect for a ride.

Take a walk on the Mammoth Lakes Paved Trail System. These trails spread all over town and are paved for easy walking or biking. Start out at the park on Old Mammoth Road.

Check out the Hyden Cabin: now open daily off Old Mammoth Road across from the Mammoth Creek Park. This old cabin sits right on the side of Mammoth Creek.

There are picnic tables and when the water is not running high some great fishing at the cabin. Inside the cabin, you will find a treasure trove of the old days in Mammoth Lakes.

Scenic Drives:  Take a drive up to June Lake and drive around the loop. When you hit the town of June Lake try out June Pie for the best Pizza in the Eastern Sierra. When we do the lop we also do the drive north about 10 mins of 395 to the Mono Lake Visitors Center.

June Lake Beach: This is the best beach in the Eastern Sierra with tons of sand and good bathrooms close to the parking area. Best to go early for calm conditions as the wind blows in your face out of the SW each day afternoon. There are SUP rentals on the beach most days of the week during the Summer months.

Horseshoe Lake Beach in the Mammoth Lakes Basin offers up a nice beach. This year the lake is full so it’s a short walk to the water. The elevation is at 9000 feet so beware the water is a bit cool and the air temperature is in the upper 60s. Bring a SUP and paddle around the Lake without all the traffic on Lake Mary.

Gondola Rides: Nothing like a ride to the top if you’re not skiing or riding. You can get out at MC Coy and at the top and walk around.   There will be snow at the top well into July, head up for a snowball fight if your not skiing or boarding.

Mammoth Mountain Snow Report: Mammoth Mountain is now open until July 28th, 2019 and all operations are out of Main Lodge.  For Snowman’s complete snow report write up with photos, lift hours and trails please use this link to the Mammoth Mountain Snow Report Page.

Lakes Basin Access The road is now open into the Mammoth Lakes Basin.

Tioga Pass is now open with no restrictions

Camping: All campgrounds now open in the Mammoth Lakes Area.

Fishing Season: Right now we advise you to fish at Twin Lakes, Lake Mary, Lake Mamie, Lake George, Convict, Crowley and or any lake over on the June Lake Loop.

Mammoth and Convict Creeks are raging right now and the water flows are too high in most sections at this time. If you search hard you will find a few spots you can now cast a worm into for a solid hook up.

For more information about fishing check out the fishing section of the web site here.

Mountain Biking: The Mammoth Mountain Bike Park is now open with several trails open from bus stop F down to Little Eagle and Canyon Lodges.

The Bike Park Shuttle is running out of the Village for a ride back up to bus stop F.  More trails will be opening soon out of Main Lodge as the snowpack below MC Coy Station is melting out fast.

Mountain Biking trails and roads in the Shady Rest area are melted out, as are the trails and roads in the Inyo Craters areas.

Here is a link to trails you can ride outside of the mountain bike park for free in the Inyo National Forest

For our complete update please use this link to the Mountain Bike Report.

Hiking: The Mammoth Lakes Basin trails are really starting to melt out now. Still some snow around, but it’s time for a summer hike in the lake basin. Try out Crystal Lake from the Lake George Parking area for a moderate hike with some insane view.

The Mammoth Rock Trail is a great hike or a bike ride. If you’re on a bike watch for horses and hikers.

Try a hike to the Sherwin Lakes, my advice is to go early with limited melted out trails open right now it gets crowded fast.

The Convict Lake trail loop is all melted out and is great for a family hike. MC Gee Creek is also melted out lower down on the trail with snow above 9,500 feet to 10,000 feet.

Horseshoe Lake Beach in the Mammoth Lakes Basin offers up a nice beach. Depending on the water year it can be a short or long hike out to the waterline. If you have dogs this is the beach for you, if you’re not into dogs head to the June Lake Beach.

Gondola Rides: Nothing like a ride to the top if you’re not skiing or riding. You can get out at MC Coy and at the top and walk around.   There will be snow at the top well into July, head up for a snowball fight if your not skiing or boarding.

Recreations News and Activity Ideas for Summer & Fall 2019

Lakes Basin Access  The road is now open in the Lake Basin, however, there is no camping at this time due to the snow and water runoff from the big winter. As soon as we get word from the Forest Service that a campground in opening up we will post it here.

Tioga Pass is open with very limited access to the west and east sides. Hours the road is open will be 10 to 11 AM and then 2 PM to 3 PM. There will be a CHP escort car to lead you thru the mess on the highway. The last word was no service’s or stopping in this area.

The Road to Devils Postpile and Reds Meadow is closed until sometime in July due to road repairs and maintenance after the very large winter we just had. The road has been plowed and they have been letting bikes in and out of the area. Watch out and yield to road crews in the area.

Camping: Lot’s of campgrounds are open, but with the massive winter crews are struggling to get everything open for the July 4th Holiday.

As of now here are the campgrounds that are closed: Twin Lakes, Lake Mary, Lake George, Pine City, Coldwater, Agnew Meadows Horse, Agnew Meadows Group, Agnew Meadows Family, Upper Soda Springs, Pumice Flat, Reds Meadow, Devils Postpile.

Upper and Lower Deadman, Big Springs, Ellery Lake, Junction, Tioga Lake, Sawmill Walk-in, Saddlebag Lake, Saddlebag Lake Group Camp, Aspen Grove.

As soon as they are ready to open we get the word about it, I will update this list.

Fishing Season: is wide open below the 9000-9500 foot level with lakes being the prime spot to fish.

Right now we advise you to fish at Twin Lakes, Lake Mary, Lake Mamie, Lake George, Convict, Crowley and or any lake over on the June Lake Loop.

Mammoth and Convict Creeks are raging right now and the water flows are too high for fishing at this time.  Hint: Hiring a guide is the best way to go if you really want a killer fishing experience in the Eastern Sierra.

For more information about fishing check out the fishing section of the web site here

Mountain Biking: The Mammoth Mountain Bike Park is now open with Downtown, Uptown, Big Ring and Shot Gun open from Chair 4 down. More trails will be open by the end of the week below the 8500-foot level / Chair 4.

Mountain Biking trails and roads in the Shady Rest area are melted out, as are the trails and roads in the Inyo Craters areas. Also the forest roads on the East Side of highway 395.

If you want some good single track riding, Lower Rock Creek 15 mins south of Mammoth is the place to go.  For our complete update please use this link to the Mountain Bike Report.

Hiking: For hiking on a bit of dirt and a lot of snow you can try the trails in the Mammoth Lakes Basin. Again above 9000 feet it will be mostly ALL snow so be prepared.

Mammoth Rock Trail has melted out now and is a great hike or bike ride. If you’re on your bike watch for horses and hikers.

Try a hike to the Sherwin Lakes as this trail is all melted out. My advice is to go early with limited melted out trails open right now it gets crowded fast.

The Convict Lake trail loop is all melted out and is great for a family hike. MC Gee Creek is also melted out lower down on the trail with snow above 9,500 feet to 10,000 feet.

Road Biking: is wide open for your enjoyment. Try a ride from Mammoth to June and back for a nice long road ride. Parking at the Green Church 5 mins out of Mammoth and riding out to Benton and back is also a great ride right now as well.

Everyone needs a selfie by the 19 foot tall Mammoth Mountain sign at the top.

There will be snow at the top well into July, head up for a snowball fight if your not skiing or boarding.

The Mammoth Welcome Center is open daily 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Fuelwood Permits on sale

Monday-Friday, 8:30 to 1:00 and 2:00 to 4:00).

6-11-2019 – Mammoth Mountain Snow Report from the Snowman

Mammoth Mountain Snow Report

6-11-2019 – Currently, we are skiing and riding on some great corn snow. You will find some nice soft carvable snow on the groomers on Chair 2 starting right out of the gate at 7:30 AM.

All the other runs are quickly getting soft now as the sun is high in the sky as we approach Summer.

Up top Cornice is getting groomed just about nightly and it’s the first to get soft up top. Scotties is also groomed and offers up some fun warm-up laps in the am.

As the day heats up any run off the groomed that is getting some skier or boarder traffic has some really good snow as it gets turned up.

Top of the Drop Outs are great, watch out on the lower half later in the am as it gets a bit sticky.

West Bowl has some bumps that are getting bigger by the day now. The bumps in here are best to ski after 11 AM.

To keep the snow in better shape grooming crews are also doing there salting, keeping the snow surface less slushy and not grabby.

The race runs are getting an extra dose of salting so the ski teams that are training have a nice firm surface to ski on for a few hours early morning.

Around 10:30 to 11 AM they pull the closures on those runs and the snow is just about perfect.  You will find a nice thin layer of silver lined corn snow with a carvable but not to firm surface below.

The base out on the hill is around 6-18 feet from what we are observing. With the warm weather, we have had the snowpack drop a couple of feet the last week.  All that May snow is about gone as we see a lot of the early May Spring base starting to appear.

Lift hours are now locked in at 7:30 AM to 2 PM with Chairs 1, 2, 3, 6, 11 and 23 open daily.  The lower gondola is also open with the upper gondola closed until mid-June for maintenance.

Mammoth Snowman Report 11-10-2018 – Opening Day

Black Tie Ski Rentals in Mammoth Lakes - Discount Coupon10:20 AM 11-10-2018 – Mammoth Mountain is open daily with Broadway only on a firm 12-18 inch base of man-made snow.

It’s was a fun opening morning, everyone was in a happy snow mood ready to get some turns in.

Broadway was a ton of fun with a mix of firm snow with a bit of soft corduroy in spots. Coverage is thin so watch for obstacles.

Snowmaking continues to run full on nightly into the early morning hours. Snowmaking is taking place on Broadway, Rusty’s, Silver Tip, Andy’s Double Gold and one beginner run.

The forecast for snowmaking calls for good snowmaking conditions nightly over the next 3-4 days and then ok snowmaking conditions. For our weather forecast scroll down the page past today’s photos.

Mammoth Mountain Weather: Today’s Mammoth Mountain weather forecast is calling for a high in the 40s at Main Lodge with a low tonight in the mid to upper 20s. Sunday into Monday night cooler air moves for better snowmaking production.

Also to note we have some smoke in the area at this time, there is a fire south of Mammoth, when the wind is out of the SW this week we will be smoky at times.

Looking at the long-range outlooks there are no storms in the 6-10 day forecast at this time. Looking into the fantasy period of Thanksgiving week we see cold and snow showers moving into the area.

The Mammoth Weather Guy posted his first Powder Outlook of the Season, here is the link

If your planning to come up for Thanksgiving, skiing will be out of Main Lodge with limited terrain. Could be a multi-sports Holiday if it stays dry.

Have a great day, Snowman will be updating you Monday – Friday now by 9 AM.

1-3-2018 Mammoth Snowman Report

Welcome to MammothSnowman.com

1-3-2018 @ Noon – Happy New Year from the Team at MammothSnowman.com

Same old story out on the hill with the groomers rocking with some great corduroy in the am and a soft surface the rest of the day.

Snowman just got off the hill and did a quick report if you scroll down the page, you will see it.

Crowd wise there are a a lot of people in town, but they seem to be slow to get to the hill, so no lines early in the am and just light lines in the pm hours.

Let’s talk about the weather now, we will continue to have a mix of clear skies with thick high clouds at times today. Highs should be in the 40’s. Lows at night are in the upper 20’s to the low 30’s.

Winds will be out of the south 5 to 15 mph with gusts to 25+ MPH possible. Gust’s on Thursday could be 50+ MPH over the higher elevations.

Tonight we expect a 80% chance of a dusting to an inch of snow, with some brief snow showers early Thursday.

Then Friday night into Saturday we could see 1-3 inches of snowfall. Snow levels will be well above 8000 feet tonight and into Thursday morning.

Next Tuesday into Wednesday is are best shot for snow. Right now models have 1-3 feet coming in, that would refresh things very nicely. 🙂  For more weather details from the Weather Guy, use this link

Just a note we have some issues with the video editor, getting that fixed and then I will get you a fresh video report later this week.

Detailed Report and Surface Conditions

1-3-2018 – Snowman headed out to the hill this AM right at 8:30 am. There was a thick cloud deck over head, I was worried about flat light but you could just see the surface when we got to the top of 16.

First thing I did was head to five to get the beta on Solitude. When I got to the top of 5 and looked down I saw a ton of floaters. The snow was good and none of the little rocks did any damage.

The good news is that is the only run I encountered those little rocks today, the rest of the runs are all cleaned up and the groomed snow was really soft and a ton of fun.

Skied Wall Street and that was a blast being first down and laying some nice carved turns. The snow was much softer then when I hit Wall Street on Sunday.

It really amazes me how well the ski area is keeping up with the snow surface and keeping it in great shape. Even with limited snow everyone is having a blast out on the hill that I have talked to.

Up top Cornice is groomed and in good condition, it ski’s best first thing when they open and it still has a nice corduroy surface.

As the day warms up by about 10 am the lower apron on the Drop Outs is still good for some wind pack turns. Yes the snow pack in this area is firm, if you fall be ready for a long slide. My advice is to have good tune on your edges

Over on Saddle Bowl they have the snow groomed into a just about perfect surface. Gremlins Gulch is also in great shape.

Taking a lap down St Anton was just perfect today. The hard stuff that was on that run a few days ago has been groomed out and back to the way Snowman likes it.

Great job by the grooming crew working with snow that is all used up and has taken a hit from highs in the 50’s.

Back at the top of 3 I did a lap on Center Bowl, it’s a bit firm at the top so watch yourself. About 6 turns in you hit the good snow, it’s a bit firm but still laps in here are a lot of fun.

Over on Broadway, Stump Alley, and Rusty’s again a fun groomed out soft snow with no rocks to be seen.

I still think the best groomed snow on the hill is over on chair 12. Sure it’s a slow ride up, but that’s what keeps a lot of people off those runs.

Next I up it was time to test out Back for More. I had seen it had been groomed so I was wondering if it would be good or not. The snow is very thin in here with some little tree tops in a couple spots. The surface was actually good and I took a couple laps in here via chair 9.

Gold Hill and the other runs in the East Bowl are all closed at this time. We need a foot or more to get them open again.

Also to note if we do get a storm next week please be advised that the Face of 25 is ALL DIRT. If you charge into that area you not going to be happy.

For my last run this am I took a ride up 9 to access the coverage and I found it’s extreme low tide. We need a good 3-5 feet to get things going off in that area.

That’s my on hill beta from this am’s session. Plan on being out daily again now that the holidays are over. Will update again on Wednesday. Snowman out….

PS: Please use the coupons here if you can, with out them there would be no MammothSnowman.com.

Much gratitude to those who are subscribers and those who have made a donation this year, thank you very much.

Last but not least I need to move and I am looking for a new home here in town. Please contact me if you know anything. I have about 90 days left but I can leave at anytime. Thanks for your help!

Mammoth Snowman Report 12-15-2017

Welcome to MammothSnowman.com

December 15th, 2017 @ 1 PM – Clear blue skies over Mammoth Mountain Today. So much fun with the entire lift system now running. We are still skiing and snowboarding on some very fun machine groomed snow.

At this time we have a base of 20-60 inches, and there are over 120+ named runs opened, watch for obstacles as it’s still early season.

Check out our Video Snow Tour below for a sample of this week snow conditions.

There is also a detailed mountain report down the page along with your Christmas weather outlook.

Last but not least there are 50 fresh images loading for you if you scroll down this web page.

Mammoth Mountain Weather for the weekend expect highs in the 30’s with moderate to strong north winds. Lows will be back into the 20’s. There is a 20% chance of a snow shower on Saturday as well.  Sunday into Tuesday it will be clear with highs trying to move back into the 40s by Monday.

The wind forecast for Saturday is calling for north winds to be blowing 20-40 MPH with gusts to 60 MPH mid mountain. Over the top we expect gusts 60-75+ MPH and a possible wind hold for some mid and upper mountain lifts.

Next Wednesday into Christmas Weekend we will have a cold front from Canada coming down the back side of the ridge. This pattern is a very cold one and could bring in a dusting to several inches of snow. There will also be a ton of wind next Wednesday and that will result in single digit wind chills.

Years back we had a system like this and it somehow got off the coast and over water and then doubled back on us for a 2-3 foot dumper. Pray for Snow you never know what can happen.

Bottom line is get ready to bundle up… more on that outlook on Saturday.

Snowman’s Detailed Report and Surface conditions as of 12-15-2017 1:30 PM…

Today is the last day of the preseason what a blast that was. Great snow, great friends, such good times.

For now we get ready for the holiday crowds to descend upon town tonight. Good thing all the lifts are now open that will help keep lines down.

Skied most of the hill this week and one thing is for sure the snow continues to consolidate and get firmer on a daily basis. That firm base is still very carvable in most spots on and off the groomers.

Most of the groomers now have that nice corduroy surface that is soft. As the day goes on that snow gets spread around so a soft sugary surface that is a ton of fun to ski on.

However today Friday we had some SW winds pick up and they did firm the surface in wind exposed areas, so the corduroy was more crunchy then soft. Chair 4 and 16 had the best snow as it was soft and unaffected by today’s winds.

Over at Canyon the runs are getting better daily as the snow cats needed a few night’s to turn the man made cement into a fun skiable surface.

I skied both Swell and Downhill again today and they went from firm on Wednesday to soft and fun today. Snowman was shocked it was so good.

Skied down to Eagle on Wednesday and there is plenty of snow on the open runs. It was a bit firm, but with more grooming I am sure it will be fun for some laps come the weekend. Runs without snowmaking this low are not skiable at this time.

Chair 25 and 9 opened today, Snowman tried it again and thinks those runs would be fun if they got groomed. The only good sections is in areas where the wind is blowing soft snow into. I hope that tonight those runs get groomed, we could use that terrain now that the Holiday’s have hit Mammoth.

Chair 4 has great coverage and the groomers seem a bit softer then the other runs out on the hill. Great for laps with the kids. South Park is just starting to be set up with a few feature’s set up but not accessible at this time.

Chair 5 has some great corduroy in the morning on Solitude, today as that run got skied the wind started blowing the snow all around. The surface went from a firm groomed surface to sugary and soft. The face is still carvable but has definitely gotten very firm with the wind returning.

Chair 3 Center Bowl is groomed nice and wide with nice big carvable bomber turns possible first thing in the morning. West Bowl has some firm but still carvable snow with bump turns ruling in here. My favorite run off of 3 is Saddle Bowl to Gremlins Gulch to St Anton. I have not tried Christmas and China Bowl this week.

Chair 12 Groomed out fun all day long, the corduroy in here is just a ton of fun and coverage has been good.

December 1st, 2017 Mammoth Snowman Report with photos and video

Welcome to MammothSnowman.com

December 1st, 2017 @ 7AM – We have clear blue skies with no crowds on the hill this week. Come on up the snow is great.

Over 80 new photos below from 11-30-17

We currently have a base of 20-60 inches out on the hill. The skiable snow line of natural snow is right around 8900 feet, below that snowmaking is set up and running full bore on a nightly basis.

Canyon and Eagle Lodge will open in two weeks on December 13th, with the Night of Lights set for December 16 at 5PM.

Surface conditions are now back to packed powder and wind buff with sugar blowing all around. There are a few spots when entering the top that the wind stripped off all the new snow and you’re on the hard pack.

Thursdays best snow was on Dave’s and the Face of Five, the wind was blowing perfect for refreshing sugar turns. Just about every run on the hill had some of that soft sugar blowing all around. Let’s pray for more sugar snow today.

Check out the Fresh Video Snow Report below along with my new photo snow report from Thursday.

Lifts running this weekend (weather permitting) are Chairs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 23 and G1 and G2.

There are now 80+ named runs opened, watch for obstacles as it’s still early season and what we call low tide.

The weather for the next two days will offer up clear blue sky’s with highs in the 40’s and lows in the 20s.

Winds will pick up again later today and last into Saturday. Expect winds speeds to be 15-25 MPH later today with gusts to 40+ MPH. Winds on Saturday will be 25-35 MPH with gusts to 60 MPH in the higher elevations.

Then Sunday we have slight chance of snow showers with a mix of cloudy to pt cloudy sky’s and yes more winds. Highs will be in the 30’s with lows in the teens for great snowmaking. If that system would drop just a bit more south we could see a few inches of snow. Right now that is doubtful.

If you’re thinking about getting some turns in it’s worth it to make a pre Holiday trip to Mammoth Mountain. Game ON and the slopes have almost no one on them.

Snowman out…

PS Make sure to check out Weather Guy Tuesday update.

The Face of Five was perfect with refilling fresh sugar snow right down the chair line. The rest of the face of 5 was a mix of Hard Pack, Packed Powder and blown in Sugary spots.

The next few images are of the Stump Alley Express (Chair 2) and Stump Alley. The snow in here is a nice groomed out packed powder. The upper half has been getting a lot of the soft wind blown snow on it as the groomed get turned up during the day. All the runs off of chair 2 have a great snow surface and there are no rocks to be found. Broadway is groomed out perfect with a nice packed powder surface and as you can see no one around. Here a a few shots while riding up Chair 1Baby Gravy ChuteTook this shot right after I got off of Chair 3. Center Bowl is getting groomed nightly. The snow in here is not to firm and ski’s best early in the morning and when it get’s the soft stuff blowing in from the wind. Climax – The big storm from two week ago slid big time as you can tell. You can see the ice in the upper sections of Climax. That is what is left from last seasons base. Going to take a series of storm’s to get that to fill in. Saddle Bowl at the end of November has long shadows. The snow in here is a very carvable groomed packed powder. This is the Hump, Scotties and Monument. The snow in here has firmed up and set up. The line coming in from Monument offers the best turns since it has seen a lot of skiers and riders traffic. We need a few inches of fresh in here, maybe Sunday will offer that up.Looking up at the Wipe Out – We did not ski these chutes and I did not see anybody skiing in here. Looks like a firmer wind packed surface with a slick icy entrance. The Winds on Monday stripped the snow at the top ridges line down to the hard pack base. Riding up Chair 12The Groomers have been great all day over at chair 2.The corduroy last’s for hours on all these Chair 12 runs.Skiing Gremlins Gulch to St Anton to Chair 1 is a ton of fun. It’s like the rest of the groomers perfect packed powder and the run is nice and long. Skiing down Secret Spot on 12.This shot is looking out toward Main Lodge and Chair 1Got to love this view right before heading into Gondi 1 Now is a great time to learn how to ski or snowboard, no line at Chair 11. The snow is nice a soft perfect for learning. The top of Mammoth Mountain – That sign is 19 1/2 feet tall in the summer. We got base My token weekly run down Road Runner. Watch for rocks in here as the wind is blowing them down from above. The Face of 3 – Center Bowl is a ton of fun and groomed nightly Riding up Chair 10 and you can see the wind starting to blow the snow all around. Face of Five and the Top of Mammoth Mountain – Taken while riding up Chair 10Solitude with a perfect groom and a wind blown sugar surface on the lower half. Upper half was a mix of very firm snow and some soft patches.

Mammoth Snowman Report 11-6-2017

Welcome to MammothSnowman.com

Monday November 6th, 2017 @ 8:30 AM – Hello everyone Snowman here with you, Mammoth is still set to open this Thursday.

Currently out on Mammoth Mountain the snowmaking system is running on Broadway, the path to Fascination and in the Unbound Main Park.

The storm that we had high hopes for was a bust for what was forecast. So no 1-3 feet, just a few inches on the ground for now.

For this week we have clear sky’s into Wednesday with highs in the 40s a Main Lodge. Low’s over night will be warming up, we expect a 19 tonight and then a 26 on Tuesday night.

Wednesday night looks to be a bit warm with a temp of 30 for the low at Main. So just limited snowmaking at that point.

Winds will be 15-20 MPH out of the SW the next few days then will become moderate on Thursday as the cold front moves thru.

What will be open come this Thursday? At this point at least Broadway will be open. If crew’s can make enough snow there should be a path with features in the Unbound Main. They are also blowing snow now on Andy’s Double Gold.

The Long Range Weather Outlook: Yikes how do you trust anything at this point? The door is open to get a storm in here next week so at this point it’s just wait it out see what happens. At least we do have snowmaking, I remeber all the years we did not have it and did not ski.

Stay tuned in here at MammothSnowman.com as we will be updating daily now.

Mammoth Snowman Storm Update 10-30-2017

Welcome to MammothSnowman.com

Free Hot Wax Footloose Sports10-30-17 10:00 AM – Good Monday morning from the Snowman. Yahoo the warming trend has ended and things are cooling of a bit this week.

The big news is the major change in the weather pattern starting late this week.

We are headed for some significant snowfall on Mammoth Mountain this weekend into early next week. Along with an extended period of cooler then normal temperatures, for an epic snowmaking run.

Confidence is now high in a change to cold and wet, and moderate that we get 1-3 feet of snow out of this first weekend system.

There is also a chance that we do get a more solid sub tropical hook up right over Mammoth Mountain for additional feet of snow on the ground.

Bottom line is we really need to wait 48-72 hours more to know with high confidence how much possible footage we will get. Models are still wavering a bit keep holding up to our first call amounts.

Snow levels will start out around 8000 feet late Saturday/Sunday and drop to around 5,500 feet by Sunday. Yes new models are delaying the start of the system now making it a Sunday/Monday event.

Local roads will turn to R1 next weekend with chain controls possible down to the Sherwin Grade. Time to get your winter car kits set up and be ready to chain up and SLOW DOWN.

For the next few days expect a cooling trend with high clouds at times and light winds. Highs will be in the 50s on the hill and down into the 60s in town. Lows will be in the mid 30s at night.

Stay tuned in here at MammothSnowman.com as we will be updating in the AM and PM daily now.

Have a great day and if you’re a local get your yard and car ready for winter NOW.

10-23-2017 Mammoth Snowman Report

Welcome to MammothSnowman.com

Free Hot Wax Footloose Sports10-23-17 8:00 AM Good morning from Mammoth Mountain, 17 days to go before the ski area opens.

Snowmaking crews have come on board and have set up snowmaking guns on Broadway and Saddle Bowl. They will fire up the system as soon as this weeks California heat wave ends.

This week we expect highs into the 60’s on Mammoth Mountain with low 70’s in town. Night time lows are still in the 30’s with light winds 5-10 MPH in the area.

Look for highs to peak out on Wednesday and then things will slowly start to cool off here in Mammoth.

Cooler air for some limited night time snowmaking looks to be coming in around 7-10 days.

Long range weather is tough at this time of the year so hard to make any more prediction for snow or cold air for snowmaking just yet. Something is coming down the line sooner then later I just have that feeling. 🙂

Mammoth Snowman Report 10-20-2017 9 AM

Welcome to MammothSnowman.com

Free Hot Wax Footloose Sports10-20-17 9 AM  – Good morning from Mammoth Mountain, 19 days to go before the ski area opens.

Snowman feels so excited I hope you do too.

At this time we have snow falling in the area, with snow down to 8000 feet at this time.

Checking on snow totals I have 1-2 inches here at my cabin at 8200 feet. 2-3 Inches up at Main and more up top.

The snow is a nice thick heavy wet base snow, just what we need to get some moisture back into the ground.

Mc Coy Station Cam Mammoth MountainWeather Update from 10-20:

The storm we have waited over two weeks for is here and it’s right on track to bring us 3-6 inches of heavy wet base snow. This mess will be out of here later today and then we are heading for a major October warm up.

For today expect a highs in the 30s on the hill with highs in the 40s on Friday. Lows will be into the upper 20s tonight.

Winds today are gusting to 35 in town with gust to 50+ over the ski area.

Look for warming this weekend with highs in the low 60s on the hill by Sunday and mid 60s by mid week. Here in town we could see high in the 70s next week.

Beyond that time frame we expect things to cool off as the MJO moves into Phase 6. Looks like the next chance for snow is about 10-14 days out.

Here is todays CFSv2 outlook for November, it shows a nice wet month. Confidence in that outlook is about a 3, we will keep watching and update you daily now.

Opening day for Winter Sports on Mammoth Mountain is November 9th, 2017. Snowmaking crews should start to come on board for set up and training around the 21st of October.

Things to do while we wait for winter sports to start:

For a fall colors drive Rock Creek Canyon has peaked up high but is still good lower down and mid way up. The June Lake Loop is all full of Color as is Crowley Lake and Old Mammoth.

Fall Mountain Biking is a ton of fun and it’s all based on peddle power. You can still ride the Bike Park just watch for crews getting ready for winter.

All Inyo Forest Trails are open and in prime shape for a ride.  Nothing like a ride with perfect fall weather. Rock Creek Canyon is also perfect now and there are a ton of fall colors.

Hiking is still wide open, most of the snow that fell 9/21 has melted now so it’s much easier to get around. Try the Sherwin Lakes Hike for a bit of color or a hike around Convict Lake will also offer up a colorful experience.

Mammoth Snowman Weather and Snow Report 10-14-2017

Welcome to MammothSnowman.com

Free Hot Wax Footloose Sports10-14-17 8AM  – Hello from Mammoth Mountain.

At this time we have some great fall weather in the area. Fall colors as of today are peaking out. If you’re into Fall Colors now is the time to head up to Mammoth.

Opening day for Winter Sports on Mammoth Mountain is November 9th, 2017. If we get 2-3 feet on the ground before that they will open early.

Snowmaking crews should start to come on board for set up and training around the 21st of October.

**Weather for Mammoth Mountain: Expect highs in the 50s the next few days with highs in the 60s in town. Night time lows for the next week will be down into the 30’s and into the upper 20s. Expect light winds at times the next couple days 5-10 MPH.

For the upcoming week the storm we have mentioned for two weeks is finally on our door step. As of this morning QPF would indicated 12-18 inches of snow. Yes way up from the 3-6 inches we have been talking about. One model had close to 2 inches of water coming in over the Sierra crest Thursday into Friday.

These amounts will have to be looked at again on Monday and then we will have more confidence in what may be coming our way. At this time confidence is moderate that we will pick up a few inches at least.

Looking at snow levels, expect them to start out high on Thursday above 10,000 feet and then drop to around 8000 – 9000 feet as the storm moves thru on Thursday night. By Friday we will see snow showers all the way down to 6000 feet or possibly lower.

Pray for Snow – Snowman out

Mammoth Mountain Today – 11-16-2014

ski-renter-2014-coupon11-16-2014 – 12:28 PM UPDATED Snowmaking BelowThe window-cast from out on Mammoth Mountain shows a few high clouds with snowmaking cranking in the Main Lodge area.   Mammoth did pick up a trace of snow last night around midnight.

Current Weather Conditions: Up top it’s 17 with a NE winds at 40 MPH gusting to 60 MPH.  At the Main Lodge it’s 18 with winds around SE to 12 MPH.  We have a 24 here at our studio at 8175 feet right below Canyon Lodge.

Mammoth Mountain Snow Report:   For Day 3 on Mammoth Mountain, Broadway & Main Park have a good 12-20 inches of machine groomed man made packed powder along with some hard pack that softens up during the day.

On Silver Tip to Main Park you will also find 10 jibs and one nice large jump, they also have some other cool features set up at this time.   Please watch for rocks and bare spots and stay on Broadway and the Main Park runs only please.

Mammoth Mountain Photo Shots & Snowmans Video Snow Report will return to action this Tuesday/Wednesday.  We will be having a couple video broadcasts & photo albums a week from out on Mammoth Mountain.

Mammoth Mountain Weather, Wind Forecast:  Today look for highs on the mountain in the 30s with night time lows thru the week in the mid 20s except for Monday night in the low 30s.   Winds will be northeast 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph today.  Winds will decrease and shift to the SW over the next few days. Chance of Snow Showers on Wednesday, but just a dusting at this time.

Snowmaking Conditions will be great 5 of the next 6 nights in the main lodge area.  Right now snowmaking is taking place on Broadway, Silver Tip, Main Park, Sesame Street, Andy’s Double Gold and Saddle Bowl.  As of this post Greg and his crew are grooming out all the snow they made Saturday on Andy’s Double Gold.

Here is a shot from Mammoth Mountain taken at noon today.  That is full on snowmaking for Saddel Bowl off of Chair 3.

Extended Weather Outlook:  By the end of the week we just might see some changes that will bring in some more accumulation snow out on Mammoth Mountain in the 6-10 day period.  So far the long range outlooks we look at have been flip flop from dry to wet and dry is winning out.

However in time we do believe we will be getting a under cutting of that nasty west coast ridge for some nice bouts of sierra base snow this season.  There is a chance for some under cutting to happen before the big Thanksgiving weekend.  We would call it a 50/50 chance at this time.

Here is the GFS now thru November 24th, showing around a inch of water for Mammoth Mountain.  1 inch of water = about 10 inches of snow.

gfs_total_precip_west_33

Here is the Canadian Weather Model thru the 25thcmc_total_precip_cw_39Now finally the CFS and it still wants us to get wet.  The first image is now thru Thanksgiving showing 1-2 inches of water content and the second is the 45 day outlook showing 8-9 inches of water content coming in.

Over the last couple weeks the CFS as been showing 5-10 inches of QPF for the 45 day outlook.  Snowman is pray-in it comes thru for Mammoth Mountain and the entire Eastern Sierra.

cfs_tprecip_noram_2014111600_x41cfs_tprecip_noram_2014111600_t45Get The Mammoth Weather Guys Forecast Here

Thanksgiving Outlook:  As of now expect a few lifts out of the Main Lodge to be up and running on a base of man-made and natural snow.   In years past when we have had weather like we are having now they have been able to run chairs 1, 3, 6, 11 and G1 with about 15 or so runs open.   We will need a decent snowfall and some good snowmaking conditions to get the top via Cornice open and the chair 2 / mill area running.

Canyon Lodge and Little Eagle Lodges:   Are closed until we get natural snow or until they can make snow in these areas.  At this point in time we estimate it will be mid December before these areas open for the new winter season.

Mammoth Mountain Photo Shots: click here for Snowmaking Photos from 11-2-2014 taken at 9am.  We will have more photos posted in the next few days.

We also have light winds to 5 mph and temperatures are in the 60/70’s.

Let’s pray the forcasted storms bring in some heavy rains the next two days.  We have had off and on showers over the last week but still nothing has been soaking down into the dry dirt at this point.   The best part of the rain has been the washing away pollen and dust in the area.2014-07-18_0916Mountain Bike and Hiking trails are in great shape across the entire Mountain at this time.  The Bike Park is open from top to bottom….
