Welcome to MammothSnowman.com – Snow Season 2023

Friday, February 24th @ 2 PM – Good afternoon, winter is in full force today with moderate to heavy snow falling along with moderate to strong winds.

Since 6 AM there have been an estimated 18-22 inches of fresh snowfall from the 9000-foot level up to the top. The snow study site data is a bit messed up, will have to confirm snowfall totals ASAP.

Road Conditions: U.S. 395 is closed from 10 miles north of Bishop to Walker in Mono County. Chains or Snow Tires are Required from Independence to Bishop. Expect a slow drive up from the R1 sign will blizzard-like conditions at times in the Owens Valley. I highly advise everyone to wait till late Saturday / Sunday AM to travel. Make sure you check in here before you decide to drive up.

Mammoth Mountain Weather: Currently up at the top of Mammoth Mountain winds are out of the SW at 55 MPH and gusting up to 67 MPH with a temperature of 11 with wind chills down to 0. Down at the Main Lodge, the temperature is 19 degrees with Mammoth Lakes sitting at 20 degrees.

Taking a look down the hill, Bishop is at 32 degrees with winds gusting to 30-40 MPH and 6-10 inches of new snow that’s falling moderate to heavy at times. The snowfall extends down the entire Owens Valley.

If you’re going to be out on the hill on Saturday expect overnight snowfall totals to be in the 8-14 inches range. The snowfall continues all day with snowfall rates moderate to heavy at times with an additional 5-10 inches of accumulation possible above the 9000-foot level.

Temperatures on Saturday will be in the mid-teens to start the day with upper teens to mid-20s by noon. Winds look to be out of the SW at 15-25 MPH with gusts in the 35-50 MPH range over higher elevations. Looks like a perfect Riders of the Storm Morning.

Snow Surface Conditions: Today’s conditions are off the hook with 2-3 feet of fresh light powder for the Riders of the Storm. Just amazing with chair 22 now running this afternoon. Saturday will offer more fresh powder with more powder on track for Sunday when the top could possibly pop. The next system moving in Sunday night will keep the powder train going into at least the middle of next week.

Things to do off the Hill: There are a bunch of winter activities besides skiing and snowboarding you can do up here in Mammoth and the Eastern Sierra. Here is a link to that write-up on what to do in Winter.

Ski ya Later, Snowman…

Up to 40 inches of new snow is expected by early on Saturday morning.
