Author Bio & Information

Steve Taylor, better known as The Mammoth Snowman, has been skiing Mammoth Mountain since 1969 — back when the ski school had just nine instructors and the lifts ran a little slower. His family spent the 1970s making monthly ski pilgrimages to Mammoth, staying at the Spoiler Cabin on Forest Trail Road for week-long adventures in the deep Sierra snow.
By the mid-1980s, Steve had his first Mammoth Mountain season pass and was stacking up 100+ day ski seasons — a streak he’s kept going for most of the last four decades. In 1990, he and his wife, Jennifer, moved full-time to Mammoth Lakes, where Steve became one of the first locals to run a fully remote business from home (long before Zoom calls were a thing).
Over the last 40+ years, Steve has dedicated himself to understanding Mammoth Mountain’s weather and snow conditions. He’s logged over 10,000 hours reading forecasts, studying model data, and talking shop with weather pros like Dr. George, Don Marcelin, Howard Sheckter, and Ted Schlaepfer. As a Pro Member at WeatherBell, Steve has access to global forecast models and satellite data, all of which are put to use in creating the most accurate local snow reports possible.
In the early ’90s, Steve even invented his own “on-mountain measuring system” by marking inches and feet on his ski poles. No more guessing — measure the snowpack right after a storm and you get the real numbers, from multiple spots around the hill. You’d be surprised how often the so-called “foot of snow” is off by several inches.
Steve began sharing his insights in 1990 on the old Mammoth BBS system, then transitioned to RSN Forums in 1999, and in 2004, launched MammothSnowman.com. The site quickly became the go-to source for real-time snow and weather reports, storm videos, mountain photos, and insider tips — far removed from the generic, corporate-driven updates found elsewhere.
In 2008, Steve brought the Snowman to Facebook, and in 2017 launched the private Facebook group that has since exploded to over 19,000 members. During the peak winter months of 2024, his posts reached over 500,000 people.
Today, when it’s storming in Mammoth, chances are Steve is out there — riding it, filming it, and breaking it down for the community. In summer, you’ll find him mountain biking high alpine trails, hiking Sierra ridgelines, and capturing images and video from Mammoth to Bishop.
He’s also the founder of EasternSierraMountainBiking.com and SkiingTShirts.com, continuing his mission to share the mountain lifestyle through local knowledge, creativity, and community.
