Mammoth Mountain Today – 11-16-2014

ski-renter-2014-coupon11-16-2014 – 12:28 PM UPDATED Snowmaking BelowThe window-cast from out on Mammoth Mountain shows a few high clouds with snowmaking cranking in the Main Lodge area.   Mammoth did pick up a trace of snow last night around midnight.

Current Weather Conditions: Up top it’s 17 with a NE winds at 40 MPH gusting to 60 MPH.  At the Main Lodge it’s 18 with winds around SE to 12 MPH.  We have a 24 here at our studio at 8175 feet right below Canyon Lodge.

Mammoth Mountain Snow Report:   For Day 3 on Mammoth Mountain, Broadway & Main Park have a good 12-20 inches of machine groomed man made packed powder along with some hard pack that softens up during the day.

On Silver Tip to Main Park you will also find 10 jibs and one nice large jump, they also have some other cool features set up at this time.   Please watch for rocks and bare spots and stay on Broadway and the Main Park runs only please.

Mammoth Mountain Photo Shots & Snowmans Video Snow Report will return to action this Tuesday/Wednesday.  We will be having a couple video broadcasts & photo albums a week from out on Mammoth Mountain.

Mammoth Mountain Weather, Wind Forecast:  Today look for highs on the mountain in the 30s with night time lows thru the week in the mid 20s except for Monday night in the low 30s.   Winds will be northeast 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph today.  Winds will decrease and shift to the SW over the next few days. Chance of Snow Showers on Wednesday, but just a dusting at this time.

Snowmaking Conditions will be great 5 of the next 6 nights in the main lodge area.  Right now snowmaking is taking place on Broadway, Silver Tip, Main Park, Sesame Street, Andy’s Double Gold and Saddle Bowl.  As of this post Greg and his crew are grooming out all the snow they made Saturday on Andy’s Double Gold.

Here is a shot from Mammoth Mountain taken at noon today.  That is full on snowmaking for Saddel Bowl off of Chair 3.

Extended Weather Outlook:  By the end of the week we just might see some changes that will bring in some more accumulation snow out on Mammoth Mountain in the 6-10 day period.  So far the long range outlooks we look at have been flip flop from dry to wet and dry is winning out.

However in time we do believe we will be getting a under cutting of that nasty west coast ridge for some nice bouts of sierra base snow this season.  There is a chance for some under cutting to happen before the big Thanksgiving weekend.  We would call it a 50/50 chance at this time.

Here is the GFS now thru November 24th, showing around a inch of water for Mammoth Mountain.  1 inch of water = about 10 inches of snow.

gfs_total_precip_west_33

Here is the Canadian Weather Model thru the 25thcmc_total_precip_cw_39Now finally the CFS and it still wants us to get wet.  The first image is now thru Thanksgiving showing 1-2 inches of water content and the second is the 45 day outlook showing 8-9 inches of water content coming in.

Over the last couple weeks the CFS as been showing 5-10 inches of QPF for the 45 day outlook.  Snowman is pray-in it comes thru for Mammoth Mountain and the entire Eastern Sierra.

Thanksgiving Outlook:  As of now expect a few lifts out of the Main Lodge to be up and running on a base of man-made and natural snow.   In years past when we have had weather like we are having now they have been able to run chairs 1, 3, 6, 11 and G1 with about 15 or so runs open.   We will need a decent snowfall and some good snowmaking conditions to get the top via Cornice open and the chair 2 / mill area running.

Canyon Lodge and Little Eagle Lodges:   Are closed until we get natural snow or until they can make snow in these areas.  At this point in time we estimate it will be mid December before these areas open for the new winter season.

Mammoth Mountain Snow Report – 10-14-2013

Mammoth Mountain Web Cam

10-14-2013 9:00 AM – Current snow conditions at Canyon Lodge & Main Lodges, we picked up 1 inch of light snow on Sunday Morning.

So that brings us to 4 snowfalls in October. It’s not adding up to any base, but at least something is getting in here.

I think it’s a sign of good things to come this Winter.

Mammoth Mountain Snow Report – 10-14-2013 – 7:43 AM

Current Base: There is no base, just spots that have accumulated a bit snow we have picked up over the last 3 weeks. Areas that get a lot of sun are melted off fast.

Canyon Lodge = Moist Dirt to a Dusting, Main Lodge = 0-2 inches, MC Coy Station = 0-3 inches, Top = 0-3 inches

Ski area crews have been working hard to get the mountain ready for the upcoming ski season. We should be seeing snowmaking equipment coming out in a week or so with snowmaking planned anytime after October 21st in a normal year.

The image below was taken from The Paper Route Mountain Bike Trail. The View of Twin Lakes from Paper Route on Mammoth MountainHere are the images we got last week – 9-22-2013 photo gallery.

FYI over the next 7-10 days we will be changing up our web site format, content, menus and adding in a mobile version for all your smart phone users.

We are also adding in some new bloggers to the site. That will really pick up the stoke big time this season with insane images and some fresh trip reports from inbound and out of bounds. If you would like to be a blogger here at www.mammothsnowman.com, contact us today.

Weekly Video Weather & Snow Reports will be starting with the next storm or when snowmaking begins. Going to be the best season ever at Mammoth Mountain and at MammothSnowman.com.

Mammoth Mountain Update and Snowfall Outlook 10-2-2013

10-2-2013 7AM – Welcome to Fall, seems like it was Summer one day and then boom it’s Fall with temperatures in the 50s and 60s in the Mammoth Mountain area.

36 days and counting for Mammoth Mountain Ski areas planned opener. Opening day is set for November 7th, 2013.

For some that day cannot come soon enough. If your in town enjoy these slow times and get out and hike, bike and fish. O and don’t forget the Fall colors that will be peaking out the next 14 days. (If your not in town come on up for some Fall fun.)

Mammoth Mountain Snow Report:

We picked up a couple shots of some snow last week, 2-3 inches and then a dusting several days later. At this point most of its melted off, but still some snow at the top of Mammoth Mountain and up on Bloody Mountain as well.

The ground is moist in a few spots, but on my ride yesterday most trails were back to having a dry surface. Again temperatures have cooled down to the 50s above 8500 feet, add in a SW wind and you need an extra layer. Summer days are long gone at this point.

If your into riding mountain bikes via cross country style, now is the time to get out on Mammoth Mountain. Watch for crews that are not expecting you out there, but perfect riding with no downhillers at this time. No lift access means free trail riding, get after it!

Ski area crews have been working hard to get the mountain ready for the upcoming ski season. We should be seeing snowmaking stuff coming out in a couple weeks with snowmaking planned anytime after October 21st in a normal year.

Snowfall Outlook Discussion is posted below.

Fall – Winter Outlook 2013 – 2014

El Nino or Neutral is what we are looking at for the upcoming winter. Weather models just cannot make up there minds. As of October 1st here is our outlook as we see it. Overall for the Winter in Mammoth the odds are 25% drought, 50% average and a 25% chance of a massive winter with 500+ inches.

Lets take a look see what is in the forecasted cards as of today October 2nd, 2013.

October looks to be high and dry, we have been saying the only real hope to get a base storm in here would be from a massive Typhoon out in the western Pacific.

Some of these typhoons can get caught up in a track that favors Mammoth Mountain and we can go from no base to 5 feet in a day. There is a very real possibility that some type of an event like this could happen in October this year.

2013-10-02_0837 For now the forecast calls for October 2013 shows up and down temperatures, winds and bone dry all month long. Again I have seen a forecast like that change in 24 hours to a season opening base storm. From here on out Snowman will be watching the maps daily and will give you heads up if anything is in sight.

November is starting to look like we could have some good snows move into the Mammoth Mountain Area. Below is the newest outlook chart and it shows green now instead of the brown drought it had before. Of course these are just outlooks, but we like when it’s a positive for snow and not dryness.
usPrecMonInd2Here are the outlooks for December through February. Last month we where looking at a very dry January, now they have flipped to very wet. If that 60 period pans out (Jan – Feb) we would be buried big time with days and days of powder skiing and snowboarding.

Mammoth Mountain Winter Outlook 2013-2014 – First Call

mammoth-lakes-pines-cones38-5-2013 – First off it’s way to early to make a call on next winters weather, but we always do anyway.

Snowman is more like the natives and takes a look at the plants and trees.

The Fir Trees are always the first thing I watch.  This summer we have massive cones forming on them and they are peaking out early.

I have never seen a drought year follow these massive cones when seen in July and August. Looking at my notes from over the years, 65% of the winter’s that follow are above average while 35% came in at 90-110% of the average.

For now I am going to enjoy this epic summer, but I got that feeling that it’s going to DUMP this upcoming winter on Mammoth Mountain.

mammoth-lakes-pines-cones2

Get your wood piles ready early and get in shape now for all those endless powder days that are sure to come at some point in time.  I just hope it’s 2013-2014 when that happens once again.  That big winter of 2 years ago seems like so so long ago.

Snowman out….

PS:  The Mammoth Weather Dweeb says that when he see’s trofing in August it’s a good sign of things to come for the upcoming winter.   cpc_NAM_f120wbg
