10-19-21 @ 3:16 PM Mammoth Mountain is closed and is set to open on November 13th.  If they receive several more feet of snow they might open early, as they have in past seasons.

The storm system that came thru early Monday left 5-6 inches of snow. That’s on top of the snow that fell on the 8th and 12th of the month. Those snowfalls added up to a foot of fresh snow at the Mammoth Mountain Snow Study Site.

Enough cold air was brought in from the low that brought the snow Monday that the snowmaking system ran all day yesterday.  However, when I checked at sunrise today the guns were off.

Lot’s of rumors and questions about an early opener. No idea what the plan is, but in past years if they picked up 2-3 feet of snow they would open early. A few years back they had plenty of snow to open early but waited till they could pull off a quality opener with a bunch of lifts and runs.

Back in 2009, there was a big October mid-month storm and the mountain opened for 3 days starting on October 16th. Of course, there was 2004 when the mountain opened with a 4-6 foot base on October 21st with chair 1, and then on October 22nd, they opened 23 for the season.

All eyes now turn towards the next big storm system and what date the mountain will pick to open early…
