The Mammoth Morning Report from the Snowman

September 5th, 2022 @ 7:15 AM – Happy Labor Day to all You hard workers out there. Looks like a great day to get out for an adventure in the Eastern Sierra High Country.

As we move into the Fall recreation season the first change you will see on Tuesday is the closure of the Reds Meadow Shuttle, you can still drive down but expect periods of long delays as the next phase of replacing the road down starts.

Up at Mammoth Mountain, they plan to run the Adventure Center, the Bike Park Lifts and the Scenic Gondola Rides through September 18th. After that, you can still ride your bike and hike it will just be all leg-powered fun.

Fall Color Season will get underway later this month in the very upper elevations with a slow-down canyon turn expected into mid-October. We will be going out every Tuesday looking for Fall colors and reporting back each Wednesday starting on 9-20-22. Areas that will be covered will be Bishop Creek Canyon, Rock Creek Canyon, MC Gee Creek Canyon, the June Lake Loop, and the Mammoth Lakes Area.

Mammoth Weather will continue to be warm this week with expected in the mid to upper 70s at the resort levels at 8900 feet. Highs in Mammoth Lakes look to reach the low to mid-80s into Thursday.

Excessive heat warnings are up for 395 in the Owens Valley and for the Bishop area into Thursday. By next weekend there will be a 10-15 degree drop in temperatures with some cloud cover and possible T Storms.

For those of you planning an Outdoor Adventure this week get out early and avoid the afternoon heat and scorching sunshine. Hydration will be key over the next week so drink lots of water before, during, and after your adventures.

Mountain Bike Report: All trails and Service roads are open at this time. With the current forecast, our advice is to ride the high country and get out during the morning hours. It’s also key to bring extra water, the sun is just blazing hot under this high-pressure dome over the area, so stay hydrated.

For those whose who want to ride out of the Bishop area, I would advise a sunrise ride or just forget it and head to the high country.

Looking at September expect temperatures to start to cool off around the 10th for some nice early Fall Mountain Bike weather. The final week and weekend in the bike park are looking nice, there might even be some more brown pow days.

For the full details on Mountain Biking in the area check out our full report at this link.

Mammoth Mountain Winter Upgrades: Out on the hill crews are working on a massive upgrade to the snow-making system.  So far they have torn out the old snowmaking liner at the MC Station Snowmaking Reservoir. That area has all been regraded and it looks like crews are close to laying in the new liner.

You will also find big upgrades taking place at Woolly’s Snow Tube Park with a bunch more lanes opening this winter. In time this area will also be home to the Summer Adventure Center.

As far as the 2-year project to replace chair 16 and chair 1 to 6 packs, I have not seen any action on those projects yet. Tried to check out the Mill the other day, but the area was roped off due to the snowmaking project laying new piping in the area.

PS: I took a week off from outside adventures, but fear not on Tuesday I will be back out getting fresh photos and video clips. That will be the plan all this Fall, hope to keep you entertained with some fun and gorgeous content.  🙂
