Welcome to MammothSnowman.com – Snow Season 2023

Monday, March 6th, 2023 @ 9:56 AM – Good morning, snow showers continue at times out on Mammoth Mountain. There have been 2-3 feet of new snowfall over the weekend with the seasonal snowfall total now up to 554 inches with a base of 224 inches at the 9000-foot level.

Due to a massive power outage on Sunday along with the excessive snowfall over the last couple of weeks, the mountain is struggling to get things running this morning. As of this update they expected to get some lifts up and running out of Canyon Lodge and Eagle Lodge during the 10 AM hour. No word on when or if the Main Lodge area will open today.

Down in Mammoth Lakes, the continued abundant snowfall is creating issues with excessive snow loads, roof shed dangers, and very narrow roads. Add in the fact that much of the parking in Mammoth is now being used for snow storage and it’s a big mess.

The town did send us an update saying they have declared a state of emergency to allow more outside resources to move in and help with snow removal issues. Cal Trans has also sent more trucks and crews to help with clean-up.

If you plan on coming to Mammoth Lakes this week my advice is to bring a snow shovel and all your food supplies. Be ready for limited parking and congestion on local roads. Snow removal crews are working 24 / 7 to clear snow out before the next series of wet storms start Thursday night.

Road Conditions: 395 is open to Mammoth with R1 conditions on 203 and the local roads in Mammoth Lakes. The Mammoth Scenic Loop is closed as is Rock Creek Road at Toms Place.

Mammoth Mountain Weather: At the time of this post, up top, the winds are out of the WSW at 36 MPH and gusting up to 46 MPH with a temperature of 4 with wind chills down to -22. Down at the Main Lodge, the temperature is 12 degrees with SW winds gusting into the 10-30 MPH range.

If you’re going to be out on the hill today, expect cloudy skies with a 30% chance of snow showers with light accumulations possible during the morning hours. The day will start out cold with single-digit highs and then temperatures in the mid-teens by mid-day.

The wind forecast is for a southwest wind at 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 35 – 50 mph along with wind chills in the -10 to -20 range. Bundle up and enjoy the fresh powder day that will be awaiting you.

Snow Surface Conditions: Powder, Powder, and More Powder, and that will be the call through at least today with some leftovers possible on Tuesday.

Do be aware that with the massive snow base at Mammoth Mountain, there will be long delays in opening many of the lifts after big snow storms. Why? Simple they need to plow out as in some locations the base is up to the chair lift. Yes, there is that much snow at this time, and more on the way.

It’s going to be a LONG Spring and Summer Winter season out on the Hill. If you want to Ride from mid-April to the end and then all of next season get an Ikon Pass. They will go on sale again on March 16th.

Things to do off the Hill: There are many winter activities besides skiing and snowboarding you can do up here in Mammoth Lakes and the Eastern Sierra. Here is a link to that write-up on what to do in Winter.
