Welcome to MammothSnowman.com – Snow Season 2023

Wednesday, March 8th, 2023 @ 10 AM – Good morning, skies are cloudy over Mammoth Mountain with snow falling and 1-2 inches of new snow out on the hill.

Mammoth Mountain Weather: At the time of this update, up top, the winds are out of the SW at 65 MPH and gusting up to 76 MPH with a temperature of 5 along with wind chills down to -26. Down at the Main Lodge, the temperature is 12 degrees with an SW wind gusting into the 20-65 MPH range.

If you’re going to be out on Mammoth Mountain today, expect snow showers with 1-3 inches of new snow possible along snow ratios in the 15-1 range. Temperatures will be in the upper teens to low twenties today with SW winds 15-25 with gusts in the 35-55 MPH range over the higher elevations.

On Thursday expect increasing clouds and winds leading to a chance of snow showers during the afternoon hours. Temperatures will be in the upper twenties to low 30s with SW winds 25-40 with gusts in the 50-65 MPH range over the higher elevations.

Road Conditions: 395 is open to Mammoth with R1 conditions on 203 and the local roads in Mammoth Lakes. The Mammoth Scenic Loop is closed as is Rock Creek Road at Toms Place.

Snow Surface Conditions: Mid-Winter packed powder along with fresh blowing and falling snow is what you will find on the hill today. With the high winds, the best skiing and riding today will be out of Canyon and Eagle lodges. Mid and Upper Mountain lifts look to remain closed all day.

Thursday morning should offer some pt cloudy skies with tons of fresh corduroy and some low-end powder action in some sections up top and around mid-mountain. By mid-day, more snow comes in so get out early before mid and upper mountain lifts close again.

Snow conditions on Friday look to be questionable with a mix of snow and rain possible along with high winds on the runs that will be open.

By Saturday conditions will be mid-winter again from Ealge Lodge over to Main with some Sierra Cement Freshies on the runs that do open.

However, You can also expect some major delays if you plan to get out on the hill this Saturday. Expect local road closures and delays in getting any lifts open after they ice up from the rain/slush that is expected on Friday.

My advice to everyone reading is to sit out this upcoming weekend and reschedule for a later date.

No worries as there will be lots of time to ski and ride. With what looks to be the all-time most snow for a season in the Ski Areas History you can expect skiing and riding to last well into if not through the Summer months.

Town Winter Update: In Mammoth Lakes, the snow walls have become so high that’s all you really see in town now. It’s a bit hard to find most of the local businesses as they are all behind the walls of snow.

The continued abundant snowfall is creating issues with delayed snow removal, excessive snow loads, roof shed dangers, and very narrow roads. Add in the fact that much of the parking in Mammoth is now being used for snow storage and it’s a big mess.

Officials have now declared a state of emergency to allow more outside resources to move in and help. Cal Trans has also sent more plow trucks and crews to the area to help with clean-up and the next incoming storm cycle.

If you plan on coming to Mammoth Lakes this week my advice is to bring a snow shovel and all your food supplies. Be ready for limited parking, road closures, and congestion on local roads.

Snow removal crews are working 24 / 7 to clear snow out before the next series of wet storms starts Thursday night.

Snow Surface Conditions: Mid-Winter packed powder along with fresh blowing and falling snow is what you will find on the hill today. Thursday morning should offer some pt cloudy skies with tons of fresh corduroy and some low-end powder action in some sections up top and around mid-mountain.

Ski ya Later, Snowman…
