Mammoth Mountain Photo Snow Report from the Snowman – 11-27-2023

I was out on the hill on Monday morning first chair and found that the snow is holding up well on the groomed-out sections that were open. The best snow was on Broadway, with fresh man-made snow, and some really good grooming.

Broadway

Over on Chair 3 Saddle Bowl was also skiing and riding well. The sun shines the full length of Saddle Bowl around 10 AM making for even better snow.

You can get to West Bowl by traversing in from Saddle Bowl. Once in West Bowl, the bumps are now big and firm with some obstacles you need to watch out for. I took a photo from afar since Snowman does not ski hard bumps anymore.

We checked out Mambo and first thing in the morning it was a bit too firm for my liking. Once the sun warmed the snow up the turns got better. A couple more nights of grooming with get the snow into decent shape on this run.

Jon and I thought Stump Alley had a fun surface, but others did not like it as it was a bit firm. Snowmaking crews still have a lot of work to get the full width of Stump Alley open. Give it a week and both sides should be skiable.

I did ski around the back side of 1 with the snowmaking machines on, there were some fun man-made freshies in here. Skied down to Rusty’s proper and the snow was on the firmer side but still fun to carve. Andy’s Double Gold was getting groomed and looked like it would be open soon.

Up Top, the runs remain closed, we need a big storm as you can see from the Photo Snow Report below. I did see the cat crew grooming out the ramp at 23 and the ski over to Cornice Bowl on Monday. Snowmaking crews just need to make snow at the top of Cornice and they could get a decent section open.

Climax

The base on the hill is around 12-18 inches with a nice packed powder surface on a firmer man-made base. Other than Mambo I did not encounter any other icy spots on my runs on Monday. I am sure there are some out there so watch yourself.

Snowmaking crews are working overtime now as the cold air moved into the area last weekend. The snowmaking guns and fans must have run nonstop for 4 days until they shut down mid-morning on Monday.
