Mammoth Mountain & Eastern Sierra Recreational Weather

May 1st, 2024 @ 12:30 PM – Mammoth Mountain Weather – It’s a chilly spring afternoon with a temperature of 32 up top and a southeast wind of 11 to 17 MPH. Wind chills are 24 degrees. Down at Main Lodge, the temperature is a much warmer 48, with SW winds at 2 – 10 MPH at times.

The short-term weather forecast calls for clear sunny skies, slightly cooler-than-average temperatures, and light wind gusts over most elevations. Elevations above 9500 feet can expect moderate wind gusts at times.

By Friday night, the next upstream low will be heading our way. That system will bring much cooler daytime highs along with a chance for snow showers, gusty winds, and a brief period of moderate to possibly heavy snow over the high country above the 9000-foot level later on Saturday into early Sunday.

Snow levels look to be around the 7500 – 8000 foot level, dropping a bit on Saturday night. If it all comes together as forecast, snowfall ratios are on track to be in the 10-1 range for some decent May freshies.

As of late Wednesday morning, it looks reasonable to say there could be 5-10+ inches of snowfall from the weekend spring storm above the 9000-foot level. My take is that the 10 inches is on the high side of what Mammoth Mountain will see.

However, there is a bit of a moisture tap, as you can see in the image below. If the front can hold together and that moisture can work its way into the Sierra and over Mammoth Mountain, maybe those higher totals will be verified.

Mammoth Mountain Weather – The Long-Range Fantasy Outlook

In the Long-Range Fantasy Outlook, winter will be over, and late Spring weather will take over as the calendar approaches the 10th of May. The dryer and warmer weather is showing up on the ECMWF Weeklies all the way out into mid-June.

This is a dry and stable pattern with just above-average highs in the area that looks to carry into early Summer. Yes, the Boreal Summer is now just 30 days away.

* Mammoth Mountain and Eastern Sierra Weather is updated several times a week by local Steve Taylor. The goal is to provide detailed weather forecasts presented in an easy-to-read format. This isn’t a Hype, one-and-done model-run website. It’s just the basic facts from how I see it after 40 years of being involved in the local weather and recreation. And yes, I use Weather Bell for my forecasting data.

Author – Steve Taylor – The Mammoth Snowman Over the last 30+ years, Snowman has spent countless hours studying and learning about Mammoth Mountain Weather and Snow Conditions first hand. He has been skiing around the hill with marked ski poles since March of 1991 so he can measure the fresh snowfall amounts out on the hill.

Snowman started blogging this information back in 1990 on the old Mammoth BBS system, then the RSN Forums and then on to MammothSnowman.com in 2004 with Video & Photo Blog reports. (No YouTube back then). Facebook got added to the fold back in 2008 and then the Facebook Group in 2016.
