Welcome to MammothSnowman.com – Snow Season 2023

Monday, March 20th @ 6:05 AM – Good morning, 16-20 inches of new snow has fallen from the 9000-foot level up to the top.

Mammoth Mountain Weather: At the time of this update, up top, the winds are out of the WSW at 45 MPH gusting up to 60 MPH with a temperature of 13. Down at the Main Lodge, the temperature is 20 degrees with an SSW wind at 20 to 40MPH at times.

If you’re going to be out on Mammoth Mountain today expect snow showers with 2-3 inches of snow possible early on. Temperatures will come up into the upper 20s to lower 30s by mid-day.

It will be a bit windy this morning with a southwest wind of 25 to 35 mph decreasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 45-55 mph over higher elevations. Get the full Mammoth Weather forecast at this link.

Road Conditions: 395 is open with R1 or chains required from 1 mile south of highway 203. In Mammoth Lakes roads are R1 with narrow streets so please slow down. The Mammoth Scenic Loop and Rock Creek Road are closed until further notice. Also to note 395 is closed at Mono Lake both North and South for at least 2-3 more weeks if not longer.

Snow Surface Conditions: Powder, Powder and More Powder is on tap for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday with snow ratios for Monday in the 8-1 to 10-1 range. Locals’ choice for today is Chair 22 early on. As the weather backs off later this morning 3 and 5 could also open with some nice freshies to be had.

If you’re looking for groomers the cat crew was out last night so expect corduroy in spots with several inches of snow on top of the groomed-out surface. Should be a fun day out on the hill with all the new fresh snow.

Town Winter Update: With all the out-of-town resources in the area much progress is being made in widening roads, especially in the Canyon Lodge area.

Crews are taking a break for the next couple of days and then will resume midweek once we get past these next 2 weather systems. Expect the snow removal recovery process to take a couple more weeks and then travel in town will resume to normal.

If you plan on coming up over the next few days I would still bring your own food and supplies and have a snow shovel ready to go. Don’t forget a good book or two and if you have kids bring sleds and snowshoes. Be ready for slow travel in town and very narrow roads.

Also of note, when you’re checking into your lodging property and notice any structural damage due to the snow load, please report it to the lodging manager and call 911 right away.

Website Author – Steve Taylor – Mammoth Snowman Over the last 35+ years, Snowman has spent countless hours studying and learning about Mammoth Mountain Weather and Snow Conditions first hand. He has been skiing around the hill with marked ski poles since March of 1991 so he can measure the fresh snowfall amounts out on the hill.

Snowman started blogging this information back in 1990 on the old Mammoth BBS system, then the RSN Forums and then on to MammothSnowman.com in 2004 with the Video & Photo Blog report. (No YouTube back then). Facebook got added to the fold back in 2008 and then the Facebook Group in 2016.
