Mammoth Mountain Weather Forecast & Discussion

January 5th, 2024 @ 2:30 PM – Time to Rock and Roll with Winter Time Storm Action folks.

After a 2-month delay, the next ten days look to bring some big snow totals to Mammoth Mountain. The first system in this time frame will start moving into the area during the morning hours on Saturday. The majority of the snowfall action will occur Saturday night, setting up Sunday as a decent Powder Day.

The front coming through will have some frigid temperatures, bringing higher snowfall ratios in the 12-1 or greater range.

Snowfall amounts look to in the 12-18 inch range from Main Lodge to the top. With 8-12 inches possible in Mammoth Lakes, down on 395 from the Mammoth Airport to Toms Place 2-5 inches with 1-2 inches possible from Bishop to the top of the Sherwin Grade.

The first system moves out quickly on Sunday morning, with just a few showers left at sunrise. Higher heights will be in the area on Monday and Tuesday with sunny skies and mid-winter conditions.

The next system enters the area on Wednesday, and will be the start of what looks like mostly continuous snow showers with moderate to heavy at times right into day 10.

Keep in mind this pattern will start cold, and then past day 10, snow levels will start to slowly come way up as the breakthrough of the westerlies ushers in mush warmer air and some deeper subtropical moisture.

Confidence in this pattern change is improving with each verifying run. The best news is the EU & GEFS Ensembles are showing this, not just the flip-flopping GFS operational model that so many people get fooled by everyday.
