Mammoth Mountain Weather Forecast & Discussion

February 25th, 2024, at 9 AM – Good morning; here is what you can expect this week for the weather out on Mammoth Mountain.

If you’re heading to the hill today, look for mostly clear skies. Temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 30s around Main Lodge, with lower 40s down at Canyon and Eagle Lodges.

Winds will pick up out of the southwest at 10 to 20 mph, increasing to 15 to 25 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph with stronger gusts over the Top.

For Monday, look for increasing clouds during the day, with mid-day temperatures in the low to mid-30s. Winds will be moderate to strong out of the SW at 20-30 MPH with gusts in the 35-50 MPH range on the lower and mid-mountain, with wind gusts up Top on the 60 -75 MPH range.

Late in the day on Monday, snow showers will move in, with late afternoon and evening snow showers adding up to around 3-6 inches from Main Lodge to the Top.

Travelers on Monday can expect snow showers later in the afternoon into the evening hours down to Toms Place, with a dusting to 2 inches of snow possible on 395 in those areas.

For Tuesday into Wednesday, there will be a break in the action with more Blue Bird conditions and mid-day temperatures in the mid to upper 30s. Winds look to remain in the moderate range on Tuesday before becoming light on Wednesday.

By Thursday, the next strong low-pressure system will be moving our way and will start sending in some clouds and moderate winds. Looks like a decent wind-buff day could be in the making.

If you plan to travel to Mammoth Lakes next Friday or Saturday, as of now, moderate to possibly heavy snowfall at times can be expected down to the bottom of the Sherwin Grade and possibly into Bishop by Saturday.

Detailed Weather Summary: One last day of sunny skies, and then the cut-off low off the coast will be moving into the southern half of California while an inside slider drops into the Great Basin.

That type of weather pattern will bring moderate winds today, with moderate to strong winds on Monday. Along with the winds, expect increasing clouds and a chance of snow showers late in the day into the evening hours on Monday.

Tuesday and Wednesday, some short wave ridging moves through, bringing mostly clear skies. By Thursday, winds will be back in the moderate range (Wind Buff Alert) as the next deep low-pressure system will start to affect the weather over Mammoth Mountain and the Eastern Sierra.

That next storm system has a path and the strength to set Mammoth Mountain up for a classic Sierra dumper later Friday into early Sunday. Travels need to keep an eye on that storm as it will have low snow levels along with strong winds that could create blizzard conditions at times. That strong system will be out of the area by days 9 and 10 as more high pressure sets up in the area.
