Welcome to MammothSnowman.com – Snow Season 2023

Thursday, April 6th @ 9:20 AM – Good morning, there are still winter conditions out on Mammoth Mountain as of this morning. Over the next few days spring will make it’s first appearance with the lower half of the hill converting over to Spring conditions starting today. This weekend the spring conversion should make its way up to at least MC Coy Station and possibly a bit higher.

The snowline at this time remains just before the top of the Sherwin Grade (6000 Feet) leaving all of southern Mono County white. Below that elevation Bishop and Round Valley are greening up with lots of off-the-snow activities to be had at this time.

As the area warms up this month you will want to have multiple things to do when you travel up. Most people ski/ride in the mornings and then change over to other afternoon activities once the snow gets too wet and sticky.

Mammoth Mountain Weather: If you’re going to be out on Mammoth Mountain today, expect clear skies with temperatures in the mid to upper 30s, with winds out of the SW at 5-25 MPH. Friday looks mostly cloudy with highs in the low to mid 30s with cloudy skies and a slight chance of snow showers. SW winds will be in the 15-30 MPH range during the day time hours.

Moving forward Spring looks to pop this weekend with temperatures moving up into the lower 40s up top with mid-40s to low 50s from Canyon to Main Lodge.

Road Conditions: 395 is now up north and with no restrictions, just beware of the mandatory escort at Mono Lake. Delays of up to 30 mins can be expected. The Mammoth Scenic Loop, Benton Crossing Road, and Upper Rock Creek Road are closed until further notice. Tioga and Sonora Pass are closed and not expected to open until around July 4th.

Snow Surface Conditions & Mountain Operations: Cold days have kept the snowpack in winter conditions out on the hill with packed powder groomers and wind buff off the packed trails.

The snow pack over the next few days and into the weekend will start to change over to spring conditions below the 9500-foot level with firmer wind-buff winter conditions remaining over the upper Mountain runs. Time to break out the sunscreen and make sure your skis and snowboards are waxed up.

With all the snow on the ground, Mammoth Mountain announced that they plan to run for winter sports at the Main Lodge through at least the month of July. If there happens to be a cooler summer they plan to run longer and hopefully beat the closing day record set in 1995 on August 14th.

For those who are wondering about the Mountain Bike Park, there is a chance the park will not open this year with the record-breaking snow. However, there will still be lots of riding in the area. Make sure to check out our weekly mountain bike reports here.

Mammoth Mountain Photos: Check out our almost weekly photos albums from Mammoth Mountain. There are photos from the last 4 winters so you can compare the current to the past. Here is the link to all the photo albums.

Website Author – Steve Taylor – Mammoth Snowman Over the last 35+ years, Snowman has spent countless hours studying and learning about Mammoth Mountain Weather and Snow Conditions first hand. He has been skiing around the hill with marked ski poles since March of 1991 so he can measure the fresh snowfall amounts out on the hill.

Snowman started blogging this information back in 1990 on the old Mammoth BBS system, then the RSN Forums and then on to MammothSnowman.com in 2004 with the Video & Photo Blog report. (No YouTube back then). Facebook got added to the fold back in 2008 and then the Facebook Group in 2016.
